The reason most people don't respect Ron's character is because he was virtually b*stardized in the movies, made into a comic relief idiot whereas in the books that is NOT the case. Ron was ride or die for Harry since the moment they met, even during 5th year when the wizarding world turned on Harry and refused to believe that Voldemort was back, Ron was riding for him. The only times Ron and Harry were at odds were in GOF where Ron thought Harry somehow got his name in the hat and of course in DH where the locket was influencing him negatively.
The movies make Ron out to be a total loser whereas in the books Ron's just about as skilled as Harry. Also the Ron/Hermione relationship is given more room to grow naturally. Ron started showing feelings for Hermione as far back as Chamber Of Secrets when he tried to turn Draco into a slug for insulting Hermione and when he was jealous of her crush on that fraud Defense Against The Dark Arts Teacher. Also Ron was quite skilled at Quidditch and was a gifted Keeper, his nerves were the only thing that held him back.
JK's comments really come off mind of left field for anyone whose read the books as the Ron/Hermione pairing was hinted in book 2 and OBVIOUS by book 4. It's the Harry/Ginny pairing that always rang a bit false to me. First she's this timid little girl with a crush whom Harry hardly pays attention too and has to go to the Yule Ball with the school lap dog Neville and SUDDENLY she's this confident dime piece with 2-3 boy boyfriends who Harry is smitten with?
