Sickle Cell disease ravages African Americans. But the gene that causes it provides resistance to malaria in low land areas in Africa.

It's probably not a good thing to a light(er) skin and blue eyes in the African savannah, but in the modern era, in cities, in more temperate zones, it won't hurt. It might even help you a tiny little bit.

Some decent knowledge was dropped in the last few pages. Anyway, most people of true African ancestry develop melanin efficiently enough so they do not have blue eyes. This probably due to the fact that having browns conferred dome adaptive advantage. Browns eyes were way more successful when it came to reproduction. Probably due being less sensitive to sunlight and overall more robust. In northern Europe, sunlight sensitivity does not supply such selective pressure.
