There were some good things Tony did, and some bad things. It was wise Tony had Ralph handle that Jackie JR situation. It was wise, at first Tony gave Chris some grace and did the intervention/rehab. It was even wise that Tony didn't have Chris clipped because Adriana was snitching.

It was foolish for Tony not to have that drink with Ralph. Tony should've also def clipped Carmine Sr and had Johnny Sack takeover. It would've save Tony lots of headaches in the long run.

I understand Tony not giving up Tony B. That was family. Tony should've took out Phil Leotardo, early on when he saw he was an enemy. This is such an incredible series. I rewatch it at least once a year

Dunno if he could have gotten away with clapping Phil (before Johnny Sacks went to jail) but I agree that would have changed a lot. Phil was really the catalyst for so much shyt going left.

That being said the ultimate problem was always Tony. His narcissism, his temper, his ego. Some people are who they are, it's that simple. We can say "if he didn't do this" all day but he was always gonna do something very similarly destructive instead. Even with Chris...yea he should have recognized Chris' loyalty and supported him. But his narcissism saw a weak person with a personal problem that needed therapy, and because of his own weakness and personal problems/therapy he was always gonna lash out at Chris to make himself feel better/bigger.

I don't think he could've gotten away with the Carmine hit...the other families would've demanded retribution and they're not dumb enough to believe the "couple black guys did it"/carjacking thing. Johnny would've turned on Tony to placate the other NY families and Tony would've been whacked for sure, imo. I wasn't buying Johnny's "my brother in law is with a different family and he's got my back line," Tony was right to not go for this hit, Johnny was trying to manipulate him, then turn on him. No one else from Jersey could stand toe to toe with johnny/NY and they would've absorbed the lion's share of their shared rackets (esplanade, HUD, etc.)

IRL life when Gotti and co whacked Big Paul, two of the other families were gunning for Gotti and those close to him for years. They blew up his first underboss with the car bomb and Gotti was supposed to be there that day too. One of the reason Gotti liked all the media attention was b/c those constant cameras meant he couldn't be as easily hit.

Tony was always hesitant about doing favors for New York because of what might end up coming back down on him. That's why Junior suggested that if Johnny gets killed to make it look like a street crime. Nobody would suspect Lou DiMaggio and those psychos from Rhode Island.
