The current president's complete economic mismanagement, along with tax cuts and the impact of Covid which killed their tourism industry, is what caused the current crisis.

And if you knew anything whatsoever about Sri Lanka you'd know their debt issues come from a civil war they fought for almost 20 years. They haven't "overspent trying to keep up with the Joneses".
