If you condense ‘Reasonable Doubt’ down to an ‘Illmatic’ size track list … what tracks would you take off and would it be better than Illmatic?

What about instead of eliminating tracks from RD, we add 4 from IWW…?

Also, if illmatic is so meh to y’all, why is it always the measuring stick for album comparisons?

illmatic isnt meh… i just think its not as great as people make it out to be

like when people mention the production not one beat on there is “GOAT level” to me

I can’t agree w/ you but I respect your opinion.

IMO NYSOM is in the running for my favorite beat of all time.

Memory Lane for the drums alone…

I love Ain’t Hard to Tell

The World is Yours is incredible.

There is way to many posts about removing “Friend or Foe” for me to not stand up for it again.

It’s a straight up GEM…beat is fire…FIRE. It’s short & sweet, and blends perfectly into the following song. It’s witty af and showed more charisma than several of the other songs.

“You draw? Better be Picasso…”
For the sake of having 10 records to match Illmatic, that has to be one of the 4. Really RD only has 2 tracks that "could" come off on its own merit.

IMO, Friend or Foe is better than Ain't No nikka, 22 Two's, Cashmere Thoughts, & Coming of Age.
Disagree with the bolded, especially for the theme of what RD is. Friend or Foe is dope for hearing slick Jay but I feel you could remove it and the overall sentiment/journey being expressed wouldn't be disrupted. I can't say the same for Coming of Age.

Fair assessment, and great point.

We need more threads like this to balance shyt out bc the Jay slander is getting bizarre. My completely objective opinion as a fan of both, that actually big ups Nas, is this:

1- I don’t subscribe to the ‘it has 9 songs better so really the album is better’ logic. Part of the grading scale is the songs you chose.

2- You have to take into account illmatic dropped in 94 and RD in 96. Jay had the benefit of the game evolving, partly bc of Nas’ influence

Now that’s the Nas praise. If you’re a goofy ass stan that hates Jay close your eyes for the next part.

3- Lyrically, on that subject matter, jay was better than Nas. Bc his shyt was authentic. Nas is talking about shyt he saw. Jay was talking about shyt he did. So…

1. Can’t Knock the Hustle
2. Politics as Usual
3. Dead Presidents
4. Feelin It
5. D’Evils
6. Can I Live
7. Coming of Age
8. Bring It On
9. Regrets

These 9 songs are thematic as fukk. The upbeat more club friendly, playful songs are cut. These all have a common cord. All type somber, all hustling related. almost on some GKMC one singular story. Literally every aspect of a hustlers life. This 9 song album would be the greatest album of all time

they did revisions of album ratings :dahell:

wow wonder how much those costed labels :mjlol:
Man it never sat right with me that he had the line on “Mamma Loves Me” where he said “Reasonable Doubt, classic, should have went triple” then all of a sudden it became common knowledge and boosted by the Hip Hop media. No one felt that way until he said that. It’s not documented anywhere.

Just like his best rapper alive talk in ‘03

I don't think taking tracks from Reasonable doubt would elevate it to the level Illmatic is and Reasonable Doubt is still a classic album in it's own right.
