If everything is supposedly moving 1000 mph east with the rotating earth, how fast are westward moving clouds going in the sky right now? Serious question

This is a frame of reference question.


If I'm moving to right at 1000 mph
And the clouds above me are moving at 1000 mph

Thier relative speed to me would be 0 mph


If something was slowing the velocity vector of the clouds to 900 mph to the right they would appear to be moving left at 100 mph

You did not specify whether you were talking about ground speed or air speed. My first answer was regarding ground speed. As i stated before, your question was vague as you did not specify. When you ask a question that vague, you can make any answer the incorrect answer.

Also, Your answer of 1001 mph, is also incorrect depending on the location of the cloud in relation to the the Poles and the equator. 796mph is the bare minimum a cloud would have to travel westward at the poles, and 1038mph is the minimum at the equator.

See, now youre just kinda rambling and arguing semantics

You just said that we were in a closed system on earth meaning that according to you, everything in the atmosphere is rotating at the same rate of speed as the ground below it

All i did was disprove that by showing you how it wouldnt be possible for clouds to move freely in all directions, if that were the case

Again, if all clouds are rotating 1000 mph east with the earth, they would need to be moving 1001 mph west at the same time in order to be moving 1 mph west, relative to you on the ground

And of course, thats complete utter nonsense

And no offense, but youre actually arguing against what @KodeBlue is arguing

If we were in a close spinning system, there wouldnt be anything able to "slow" the clouds, because that thing would also be moving at the same rate if speed as the clouds

Ive literally explained this multiple times in multiple threads it goes out of range of your eyesight as well as heat rising from the ground reducing your range of eyesight

You couldnt see 1000 miles ahead of you no matter how clear the day is because of something called "perspective" which again, ive explained multiple times in multiple threads

Gyroscopes cannot decipher where or not youre on a globe

They just keep you level with the flat plane
