the real problem comes for people who are combinations of two different categories. ie your mom is white but your dad is black. which box do you check?

the thing is tho theres so much mixing in latin america that has gone down for hundreds of years its not as clean cut, the spanish and portugese didnt see it as much of a taboo to swirl as the anglo slave owners did, I could literally find open interracial marriages in my family tree going back over 200 years, they were still racist tho... so when you got a ppl thats mixed for more than three generations what do you call that? thats basically what I wanna know I feel its just convenient to throw everybody in with H because its such a muddy group, I dont consider myself on anybodys team like that when I had white friends for the first time in college them boys let me know off rip I wasnt white to them and you know how some black folk can be in the U.S. if you aint wesley snipes-eddie murphy looking then you aint black... at the same time I feel like the only place in the country that has a true mixed culture stretching back years in the u.s is louisiana... and even then its the same shyt as the carribbean why isnt that on the census... what Im trying to say is the u.s. doesnt respect and give legitimacy to mixed race people its either black, white or other... there are names for this shyt

Latino is not a race.
Race is also a social construct, and north Americans really can't process anything that doesn't fit cleanly into a box . Majority of the world identifies by ethnicity instead, but Americans have to identify by this false notion of race with only 4 categories that place more emphasis on phenotypic features and not heritage.

My dad looks like Bill Cosby and my mom looks like a Filipina Paula Abdul. People think my brother is Black or Samoan and they think I'm Rican or Tongan, depending on if I straighten my hair. I just tell people I'm brown or a woman of color.

Not all black people are the same. a kenyan immigrant and nikka that grew up in detroit are gonna much greater differences than some dude who is second generation mexican has with first generation mexicans. even white folks are lumped in with people they hate. jewish people and irish people check the same box but look at each other like when they are walking down the street.

But two people can be two different races and still be Hispanic. How are you going to have Ricky Martin (white) and David Ortiz(black) checking the same box?

Right? Its like idk Americas whole concept of mixing is different to how they teach it in the islands... mulatto is a Spanish word and words like quadroon (cuarteron) or creole (criollo) even some shyt I never heard out here which is javao (light skinned person with African features, think Blake Griffin) and when you go 2 Cuba or Dominican Republic, PR, Brazil even places like Panama and parts of Colombia you see all types of ppl that would fit those categories... In Mexico and places like Nicaragua you got mestizos mixed with native heritage but America you got weird shyt like the one-drop rule that be confusing the shyt out out ppl, take a look at Zoe Saldaña and J.Lo for example... In Puerto Rico you would call both of them Mulatas just one is darker and the other is light... In America you could classify Zoe as black but ppl dont really do that for J.Lo, even tho they both got the same mixed ancestry its weird as fukk over here as far as race no wonder ppl so messed up about that in this country
