Spears are, by far, the best close range combat weapon and it isn't even close.

Real life ain't anime. The reach alone of a spear and the fact that's it's designed to puncture is a huge advantage.

Shields are also vastly underrated. A nice shield and a decent short sword or mace is probably 2nd best.

But the ability to stay mobile and position yourself out your combatant's way as defense is huge.

Spears were user friendly with crazy reach and very underrated weapons despite being the most used during feudal era warfare. All an infantry spearmen had to do was know enough to keep swordsmen at bay. Swordsmen would have to do more work to get at them. Straight slaughter in open fields.
