It was foregone conclusion that Capt. Picard was gonna be Professor X. Even before the movie was announced and kid magazines had fantasy casting for Xavier it was unanimous it would be Patrick Stewart. Fox would have fukked up if they didn't get him it was the easiest casting ever.

Yeah when I used to watch Star Trek TNG as a kid (yes, I'm a nerd) one of the first things I thought was that he needs to play Professor X

I mean Captain Picard is basically Xavier if he could walk, had slightly better ethics and was a Starfleet captain.
