as a dude who regularly dates haitian women they themselves have told me this is a big issue since most of them were born in the bahamas and then expelled

Also DR got invaded by Haiti in the early 1820s I believe, by doing so they liberated DR from spanish influence. Haitian rulers wanted to complete the total unification of the Haiti island, in order to create a new nation, instead of letting it segregated by a border. Haitian government viewed correctly that Haitians and Dominicans were essentially the same people, except the language and customs inherited from spain. Most dominicans were of african ancestry, like haitians, except that in DR, half-breeds were more numerous there than in Haiti.

Haitians played chess and wanted to erase spanish customs and language, in order to make them understand that they were africans like them, brothers. But domos, instead of thanking them Haitians and showing them gratitude for freeing them from spaniards, rebelled themselves and made sure they were a seperate country again. They played checkers and refused to see the longterm plan/thinking of Haitians, who wanted to unite the island in order to become a powerful regional power.
