I understand why OGs praise 90s hip hop as much as they do

Preface: I used og instead of old head cause that seems to carry negative connotations lol, and it deads any serious convos cause everybody's on the defensive.

Also, while I think it can be objectively argued that the 90s were indeed the GOAT decade , it's by no means my favorite. I was raised on that early 2000s shyt so, nothing from any Era is gne ever touch that music. For example, no album from the 90s is fukkin wit Thug Motivation 101 imo. :hubie:

With that out the way, the reason I think that Era gets all the adoration and respect it deserves is because the rappers, and culture as a whole, were really wit the shyts back then when u really think about it. Meaning they were just as pro black as they wanted to be. From the attire

........ on down to the real nikkas they bigged up their bars.

"Indeed we like Khalid Muhammad MCs make me vomit; I get controversial..."
-Fugees (How many mics)

"Bang bang, boom boom, ping ping I'm the black
Whiteboys got a magazine and don't know how to act
I'll attack and make u vomit
Down wit Khalid Abdul Muhammad. "

-Scarface (Hand of the Dead Body ft Ice Cube)

Hell, even SHAQ was wit it :bryan:
"Everybody said I got fat, yep, so did my wallet
Still ripping rhymes, dropping bomb like Khalid Muhammad. "

-Def Jef on Shaq's I Know I got skillz

And then u got songs like this :
:bryan::bryan::bryan:

Ice Cube's 'True to the Game' video:

:obama:

And then you had nikkas like Brand Nubian, Public Enemy, KRS-one , X-Clan and many many more.

And if that was too preachy for the nikkas in the street, you had Makaveli himself.
It's my theory that bruh was playing the whole thug role up to gain the influence of them folks in the mud and then drop that black knowledge on em in a way that's digestible without being corny wit it.

The gems spit on this joint, :wow:

In conclusion, as much as I LOVED the early 2000s, that was the beginning of the buffoonery. nikkas was off that shyt with real substance and it was all about flash and flossing. We as a whole lost that rebellious spirit (cause m'fers would've popped off fr back then) and we've only become more docile as the years pass. And are now in an Era where weirdos like this :

that era had an aura, now the culture is superficial and a bit weird but i aint hating
Yep, the 90s is where hip-hop seen the most creativity and diversity. You can listen to GOOD gangsta shyt and then in the same 10 minutes throw on some Dope Party music...and right after jam to some Ill conscious music.

I am all for listening to new music but the truth is the music being put out today is of bad quality except for a few front runners out there.

I believe this stems from being able to produce music on a $100 laptop, pay someone 5 bucks for cover art and pump it out to millions of people in 10 minutes.

The record labels use to be the gatekeepers as far as quality goes. Now...the "rapper" is the record label and can put out whatever the want whenever they want.

Oh well, it is what it is!

Here is some real hip-hop shyt for anyone who wants to listen to it.

Apart from nothing touching TM101, you made some valid points about the 90’s,

it was more about the quality and authenticity of the music then, now it’s just a circus of goofballs that appeal to a circus of goofballs

There used to be a pride and quality to this music but that seems to have been mainly lost on this generation, it’s absurd and laughable now with all the ridiculousness.

i disagree
im coming from the underground perspective tho.

Not much in the 90s underground is touching some of the more dope stuff coming out of the dump series imo.

rap has evolved in the underground and thats where i lay my ears at.

ofcourse the 90s mainstream >>> now mainstream, but i dont really like any of the shyt thats popular now or back then.

There are way more rappers now and way more avenues to consume rap. This means there are more dope rappers and more trash rappers. I wouldn't say the best 3 rappers of this era matches the best 3 rappers of the 90s but social media has stripped the aura that used to surround these mythical figures. I think there is more good rap now than ever. Maybe not more classics though.

These demographics have suffered the most from social media:
-women
-tough guys
-politicians
-athletes
-musicians

Seeing memes of people for half the year takes away their "cool" factor. So when you hear great music the feeling from the artist doesn't grab the same way it used to.

That's not the intent of this thread tho....im not arguing the quality of the 90s over the quality of (insert decade)....im talmbout the content and how the culture as a whole was super pro black. In contrast into wat it's turned to now
