I know this thread is a couple years old but I'm glad it was bumped so I can share in the appreciation. Very few things can be called perfect but that is what this record is. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. Not even exaggerating when I say I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. And the thoughts it provoked in my mind. How it made me feel. I agree with you, OP, every black child needs to hear it.

You're right OP. I slept on Talib (and still do, to be fair) for a long time because of that stupid "Backpacker" label; that cat can spit and his writtens are NICE. I guess I unfairly kind of grew to hate him because I heard him on this corny RA The Rugged Man track. I also kinda hated that remake of Children's Story they did on the Blackstar album... I'm gonna download another copy and bump it this afternoon to see how I feel about it now. Dope music is dope music and I shouldn't let stupid labels influence how I feel about music I never gave a proper listen to in the first place.

To be fair, I like a heavy sprinkle of ignorance in my hip-hop so unless the beats are dark and gritty or they're spitting like old Treach I tend to lose interest...
