One of my friends actually cried listening to this shyt when it first dropped it was so real to him. Mos's verse is just flat out amazing with what he was able to convey.

This album also has the best run of songs to end an album that I can think of. Respiration, Thieves In The Night, and Twice Inna Lifetime???

Rawkus records as a entity was just on a whole nother level at that time.

I was thinking about doing a Rawkus era appreciation thread since I broke out Soundbombing 2 for the first time in years. That and Beneath The Surface ran my summer of '99, along with Planet Asia's first album and the first Superrappin compliation album. Can't forget the first Polyrhythm Addicts album too.

I hadn't heard Mayor or Patriotism in years and I forgot how fukking dope that album was.

I wanted to marry Toni Morrison after I read that book, literally one of the greatest novels in American Literature. Any woman who has read and liked this book is getting impregnated :wow:

classic song...

talib and mos both killed it with mos taking it to another level and dropping knowledge while riding the beat that 88 keys laced perfectly.

this is the type of song that whenever someone tries to call hip-hop "ignorant rap", I'll play for them and shut them up with the quickness...

it can't be denied, kids who listen to modern hip-hop today have no clue what they missed out on...thinking mumble rappers hyping up being drug addicts and wanna-be singer/rappers like drake are the pinnacle of hip-hop. shyt is just sad period but I guess ignorance is bliss for them.

Exactly.

whole fukkin album should be taught in school.

"its a paradox we call reality...
so keepin it real will make you a casualty of abnormal normality."

let that shyt right there sink in.

Facts:salute:

It's a paradox we call reality so keepin' it real
Will make you casualty of abnormal normality
Killers Born Naturally, like Mickey and Mallory
Not knowing the ways'll get you capped, like an NBA salary
Some cats be emceein' to illustrate what we be seein'
Hard to be a spiritual being when shyt is shaking what you believe in
For trees to grow in Brooklyn, seeds need to be planted
I'm asking if y'all feel me and the crowd left me stranded
My blood pressure boiled and rose 'cause New York nikkas
Acting spoiled at shows, to the winners, the spoils go
I take the L, transfer to the 2, head to the gates
New York life type trife, the Roman Empire state

:ohlawd:
Standout track from a classic album

This is that soulful intelligent lyricism that provokes thought.
the youngsters need these jewels .
