Agreed! I don't know why your post got so shytted on. These same people would be bytching if it were a commercial with a gay couple, or an interracial commercial talking about it being some "agenda." We do need more diverse images of black males in the media. The chances of making it pro as an athlete are almost as likely as winning the lottery. Also, like you said OP, the images we see say things without actually saying them, and when you don't see people who look like you in certain professions you get the idea that such professions aren't for you. If I have sons I will push them to focus more on academics than sports.

its an adias commercial. adidas is a sports brand. why would they show anything other than athletes? :dahell:

Rapping, dunking basketballs, catching footballs and showing off our athletic prowess is all that we're good for apparently:snoop:

Real talk, we need more "black" versions of commercials like this

Our kids need to see black people in more roles than athletes and rappers. They need to see that its ok to be "nerdy" and intelligent. That its ok NOT to be swagged out and athletic. Forreal, the more "aware" i become, commercials like these become more than just "commercials".

Little do we know it, everything we see and hear has an affect on our minds. We need black people in less "swagged out" & athletic roles and commercials and in more where the mind and intelligence is displayed.

But of course "propaganda" is designed to paint a certain group a certain way:sas2:

They both work for "the white man" in both commercials.... :francis:

You're not black:snoop:. You wouldnt understand the overall point. You got your daps, you can move on now. This topic isn't for you. This topic is geared for black people to gain an awareness of how we currently and ALWAYS HAVE BEEN portrayed in the media

Its not about the commercial. OP is asking you to look at the bigger issue. Look at the depiction of black males in the media. Look at the narrow spectrum of what we are shown we are capable of. Like OP said its usually the rapper, the comedian, or the athlete. Thats fine, but how many black males are going to make it pro? How many black males are going to become famous rappers or entertainers in general? Its not a practical image to sell to young black youth. We need for black males to know that becoming a doctor is possible, and one of the ways we do that is by showing them black doctors. Why do you think so many young black males want to be rappers, athletes, entertainers?

@TL15

actually you're way off base. if these were isolated images then you would have a point, but you have to understand the history of this country and their use of media to destroy the image of the black man.

Do you know what minstrel shows are?

Minstrel show - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted,[1] lazy,[1] buffoonish,[1][2] superstitious, happy-go-lucky,[1] and musical.
The minstrel show began with brief burlesques and comic entr'actes in the early 1830s and emerged as a full-fledged form in the next decade.

do you know about the film the birth of a nation, which was viewed at the white house?

The Birth of a Nation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The film was a commercial success, though it was highly controversial owing to its portrayal of black men (some played by white actors in blackface) as unintelligent and sexually aggressive towards white women, and the portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan (whose original founding is dramatized) as a heroic force.[5][6]

now ask yourself, if media doesn't matter, why have they used it for hundreds of years to negatively portray blacks? Do you think that they suddenly abandoned that agenda? :jbhmm:

I won't take anything you've said personally (I'm not an attacking type of person)... I'm 29, I have an MBA...I know what Minstrel Shows were/are, Birth of a Nation, Black-face, Jim Crow, de facto and de jure racism, etc etc.

To say that I'm "way off base" is inaccurate. I don't see anything in that Adidas commercial that is aimed to "destroy" black men (Hell...they even used a Black College Coach). My point was ONLY directed at OP saying that he doesn't like that specific commercial. An Adidas commercial is going to target young athletes. There is nothing wrong with showing young athletes.

I posted other "positive black" commercials to show that there are diverse commercials. I never once was using my response as a platform to defend ALL media. My main criticism was that this was a largely positive "fun" commercial and pointing out that the kids are athletes is :snoop:. I then put the other commercials to show that if you look at them with a negative eye...you can find negativity. If you look at them with a positive eye...you will find positivity.

Now...if you want to have a conversation about more than that, I'm all ears. Juxtaposing a commercial with a bunch of 17-18 year old athletes having fun with the pure hatred of a minstrel show is quite a stretch.

There are MANY black people who fit this description also:francis:

Lowkey, u just proved the point of this thread:francis:

Not all black people are swagged-out, athletic gods:francis:
And u missed the point of my post.

Why would you WANT to see a urkel type being displayed like that programmer. Those commercials were low-key dissing him. You dont see that?? :dahell:

Your point wouldve had more merit if you brought up the Lincoln commercials.

:francis: again, off base. do some more reading, and please don't think you're impressing anyone with your european credentials.

i know that college doesn't often teach critical thinking skills, but if you look closely you'll see a consistent pattern of blacks being put in a one-dimensional box. At the same time you also see that black unemployment is high, black incarceration is high, violence committed against blacks is rising, we're being pushed out by gentrification, and have zero political or economic foundation.

You need to look at the bigger picture, and stop being willfully obtuse.

Adidas pulls ‘shackle’ shoe after racism outcry

a little information on the founders of Adidas

Adolf Dassler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf "Adi" Dassler (born 3 November 1900 in Herzogenaurach, Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire; died 6 September 1978 in Herzogenaurach, West Germany) was the founder of the German sportswear company Adidas and the younger brother of Rudolf Dassler, founder of Puma.

With the rise of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, both Dassler brothers joined the Nazi Party, with Rudolf reputed as being the more ardent National Socialist.[1
