i dont want byron jones...not at no damn 16 mill
Me neither, but… what else are they supposed to do?
Philadelphia’s CBs were one of the worst in the NFL in 2019. You can look at the stats or you can watch the tape. On top of that, their two starters – Darby and Mills – are hitting FA. So an already bad unit is going to get even worse. The Eagles absolutely cannot afford to go into 2020 with Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas, Cre’Von LeBlanc, and Avonte Maddox as their major corners.
$16-$18 million for Byron Jones is an overpay, but, so what? The vast majority of good players who hit Free Agency get overpaid, it’s how the market works. At the very least, the Eagles will be getting a genuine starting CB out of it all, which we haven’t had since… 2017? Again, you can watch the tape or look at the stats and you see that – lack of INTs notwithstanding – he’s a very good player, and who’s still young on top of it. I get that we want more from a guy you’re paying that much money too, but the reality is that he’s the best available on the market.
And I get that it’s a risk. But so is every other decision the Eagles could make. You can overpay Byron Jones, or you can overpay an inferior FA corner like Bradberry. You can trade draft assets to the Lions for a 29-year old Darius Slay. You can spend a valuable 1st or 2nd Round pick on a CB in the draft even though the Eagles haven’t drafted a good one in almost two decades, rookie CBs almost never make a true impact in their first year, and they have other positions to address. Otherwise, you go into 2020 with Jones/Douglas/LeBlanc/Maddox and have a bottom-ranked pass defense unit –
again – in a league that’s becoming more and more oriented around the pass, and coverage is more important than ever.
Signing Jones is the best option. It’s unfortunate, but it’s what happens when you fail to find or develop good talent on your own. If Darby and/or Sidney Jones turned out to be anything like what the Eagles were hoping for when they acquired them, we’re not having this conversation now. But they didn’t. So now the Eagles pay the price.
