What was Gohan doing when Cell was about to explode? Exactly.
Gohan was giving up until Goku told him not to. During the beam struggle, Cell was winning until Vegeta distracted him. Gohan was looking like an idiot, not capitalizing on it until Goku had to tell him to. Hercule was the one who threw Android 16's head in front of Gohan. Before 16 had that talk with Gohan and got smashed, the Z fighters were about to get killed and Gohan was doing nothing.

He couldn't kill Vegeta no way. Krillin would've had to do it. Goku lost. I never said Trunks was the GOAT but he was better on his own than Gohan who had his hand held and was protected most of the time.
