He never ever left Gohan and Chichi. He literally died protecting Gohan from Raditz, almost died in his first fight with Vegeta, almost died again protecting Vegeta and his son from the Ginyu force, rescued everybody from Frieza while staying behind on a planet that was about to explode so he could make sure everyone else escaped.. ....the only thing that kept Goku away from his family was death.
