I think that message was stated clearly. Obviously it comes down to someone's interpretation of Daniel Plainview but the movie itself holds him in contempt. If the viewer feels differently, that's based on the viewer and now what PTA put forth

Unless you're saying we wouldn't think the film was great without it, which... maybe? Take any all-time great performance out of any movie and is the same question.

But as to TWBB, PTA's direction, Elswit's camera and Greenwood's score are all fukking brilliant as well, so nah. I'd still care about it.

It was a character study built around DDL's character, so yeah, its greatness hinged on his performance.

It still has great cinematography and a really good score even outside of that, though.

One of best movies in the past 20 years. Probably #1 for me.

"What is this? Why don't I own this?"

The menacing music between scenes is what gets me.

It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Beautifully shot, captivating story of a vengeful determined man at the dawn of the American Industrial Age and rise of capitalism. The movie captures that time period perfectly.
