It depends on what type of Christian church you belong to. Some denominations are fundamental and take every word in the bible literally. Some denominations, like mine, believe the Bible is filled with metaphors, allegories, mythos, so we don't take everything literally but square it away with Church tradition Jewish tradition, science, etc. The most important thing is to look at the deeper meaning.

The Bible says that a day with God is like a thousand years. That could be a millenia. That could be eons. So one day in creation can be a span of eons or millennia.

The most important thing to get out of Genesis is the theological truth which is God had an active hand in creation.

I don't even think the Jews took Genesis literally but understood it to be their creation mythology. That's generally how I look at it.

Also, Christian tradition dictates that the Bible is inspired, not the literal word of God, like is what is said about the Quran. Again, fundamentalist however shirk Christian tradition and believe it's the literal word of God. I don't think most mainline Christians believe that though.

There is so much variance among Christianity that you can't be reductionist and believe all Christians hold to the same beliefs. We don't.

Edit: The only words that tradition dictates are the bonafide literal words of God are the words spoken by Christ which are found in the four gospels highlighted in red. They are considered literal because Christians hold Christ to be one of the three person's in the Godhead. Everything else is inspired. But that inspiration comes from the Holy Spirit which is the third person person of the Godhead.

I believe in a young earth. If you add the ages in Genesis you will get around 6000 years. One third of the Bible is prophecy. There are things that have happened, are happening and will happen. If what is said is true then it has to be God.

1. I believe in catastrophic happenings that can throw off the dating models currently used
2. You have to read it and meditate on it and come to your own conclusion.

You could read any words and feel a certain kind of way about it.

There is nothing in the Bible that requires people to believe the Earth is 6000 years old.
If your faith is shaken by the world being 4.5 billion years old or the universe being 14 billion years old, you might need to re-evaluate what you actually believe, and why it is necessary to your worldview.

1. Radiocarbon dating, as well as other dating methods, have never been substantially disproven.
2. The Bible says of itself that it is of no man's private interpretation (2 Peter 1:20).

I've spent the last few weeks following the modern research on Bible origins. I'm a non believer but I find the whole story fascinating. Modern Judaism and Christianity are both children of the same event. Outside of the Jesus role, the main difference btwn the two religions is that Christianity has allowed itself and dogma to constantly change...culture to culture, time period to time period, even language to language..its both Christianity's strength and weakness...

...Judaism, not so much because they've kept their language, culture and are weary of outsiders.

Imma about to dive deep into Islam. From what little I know though...Islam's view of Jesus and prophets is alot more constant with Early Christianity's view of Jesus. Islam is also like an over correction of Christianity...back into pre-Second Temple Judaism. Before Christians mythocized Jesus.
