so far , this show is nowhere near The Wire, and is blashphemy for anyone to say so. granted i am two seasons in, and from metacritic scores, the show improves every season.
walter is not a likeable character. in spite of their crap, u still messed with Tony Soprano, Stringer, Avon, Marlo. you cannot like this goofy weirdo old head Walter. no swag, nothing.
Walters wife is a horrible written character. anybody who takes tv or film seriously know that the archetype of annoying highstrung wife is a horrible cliche at this point. I mean, there was no such character in The Wire who wasnt complex and nuanced.
the dude that plays Jesse deserves his Emmys. he is the most impressive so far.
Jesses drug girlfriend that had an overdose. they messed up there, they shpuld have had her character carry on like Adriana in The Sopranos. she was just coming outta her shell, and then in a cliched way had an overdose.
walters brother in law, the cop, is pure comedy, probably my favorite character.
oh yeah, his sister in law, just like his wife, a horiible written character. just another uptight wife.
a great and funny scene is wher at the end of one episode in season 2, they have old azz Walter eye fight some big azz mexican while they played TV On The Radio's DLZ. i wont lie it was a bad azz moment, but kinda silly since this old dude in real life would have been chin checked.
anyway, at this moment in time, i cannot put Breaking Bad ahead of The Wire, The Sopranos or Mad Men. its still a good show. I think it deserves its props, but season one was a 3.5 mic season, and season 2 was a 4. 25 mic season, a big improvement from the first, and i am expecting it to continue to improve. but on the eveidence so far, it is just a really interesting show. not close to GOAT status.
A few things....
1. Whether or not you like Walt is
Can't really comment on that because it's your opinion. Ironically if you dislike him now I think you'll love him later on because the point of the show is to turn this no swag/square/loser into a villain.
2. There is a "high strung wife archetype/trope" because it's realistic. It exists because it obviously works. She's pregnant, her son has CP, they're broke as a family, her husband has cancer and disappears at all hours of the day and night with no explanation. So I dunno what kinda reaction you'd expect from her.
Although it's kinda hard to judge her two seasons in, unlike any of the other shows you named the characters on this show change. That's the entire point of the show.
3. Jane was not a main character. She was basically a rung on the ladder of Walt's villainy. He killed Krazy 8 because he would've killed Walt and his fam....he let Jane die because she was gonna snitch. Over the course of the series Walt kills more and more people and it becomes harder to justify why he does it.
4. As far as the parking lot scene, ok they whup Walt's ass. He goes into business with Gus the next ep, and does the $1.2 mill deal. Walt would not let the shyt slide and both of those guys would be dead. You can't be an out-of-towner beating up random people.
I'm interested to see your opinion as the show goes on but a few things I think you're coming at it from the wrong angle. Like the Jane shyt for example.
