Yeah IIRC ea sports was attempting a more realistic/simulation style of gameplay after the release of live 2003 with their arcade style game that had everyone, including Reggie Miller, looking swole and vince Carter doing 360 windmill dunks in traffic:mjlol:.

And with that came a new rating system. It was meant to highlight player strengths and weaknesses but it ended making some undeserving star players looking average or even worse.

Iirc even gamepro brought that up in their review.

That game was forgettable though esp. compared to live 2003, 2005, and 06.

This was the first NBA Live game where they finally had actual arena models for each team, unlike the previous games with same damn arena model for each team. Off that alone I would give this game good ratings. This and 05 was NBA Live at its peak.

got damn :picard:

I remember Abdul-Raheem being the best player but I don’t remember the rest of the ratings being that trash.

they finished 28-54 that year..seeing them go from absolute trash to where they are now has been an amazing experience though
I hated that squad

Players back then didn't really grow up playing basketball video games in any significant fashion since by the time they really got popping off they were already in college/the league, so they didn't have enough of an attachment to the games to get sensitive about it. That 04 rookie class like LeBron, Carmelo, etc. were the first generation of guys who really grew up on video games.
They played games but Live wasn't selling like that. 2k clearly wasn't selling like that.

If you wasn't NCAA football or Madden, you likely had 1 mil sells. Today, 2k sales like 8 mil copies. Basketball gaming is serious. Back then, it was 2nd fiddle to football
