dude are you slow or something?? I'm sitting chilling laughing at your monkey ass. Toni was a decent artist but the FACTS are that she blew because of her affiliation with Babyface, looks(which were similar to anita), and the fact she sounded like ANITA. EVERYONE knew that. And are you REALLY trying to say that artists TO THIS DAY don't thrive because of what producers they affiliated with?? :martin:
right now EVERYBODY goes to Mike Will or Metro Boomin because they are the HOTTEST out. stop with the BS fam...I'm done even entertaining your clown ass :martin:

:russ: awww don't be done yet, you haven't morphed into super saiyan lying ass wierdo just yet.

okay so by your definition Mary J was hot out the gate only because of diddy, and this is a sentiment that has been echoed by many throughout her entire career

and everybody has heard but me...i'm the only person that has NEVER heard these arguments :mjlol:

and no...people aren't sitting around cookouts and in barbershops saying that XYZ singer is ONLY hot because of the producer they work with.

next cookout you're at and they play some old Motown songs, say "this songs only good because Holland Dozier produced it, without them they ain't shyt!" and see what type of looks you get

nikka yes she was :dahell: we all know she can't really even sing :martin: Puff's uptown sound carried her for a LONG time until she got her legs underneath her. And it's funny that you mention her consider this
At the age of 17, Blige recorded a cover version of Anita Baker's "Caught Up in the Rapture" in a recording booth at a local mall. Her mother's boyfriend at the time later played the cassette to recording artist and A&R runner for Uptown Records, Jeff Redd.[3] Redd then sent it to the president and chief executive officer of the label, Andre Harrell. Blige met with Harrell in 1990 and performed the song for him.

again, for the 8th time - EVERYDAY PEOPLE DON'T MAKE THESE ARGUMENTS

when I was in high school, nobody was saying "mary is cool, but i wonder how she'd sound if diddy wasn't backing her"

nikka she was just HOT.

this is a weirdo, cornball, emotionally disturbed, slew footed, dorito breath smelling lonely ass, porn addicted internet troll argument.

people in the real world don't talk like this...

but let it be known that this is the length dudes will go to win an argument online....any psychology students reading this need to take notes.

:stopitslime: really nikka? stop all the theatrics and fake anger and admit you just can't make any solid damn points

we're in a discussion about anita baker and look where you weirdos have steered it.
so you're telling me that everyday casual music fans are out here discussing songwriters, producers, and the key players behind their favorite songs!? on what planet!? :mindblown:

what's crazy is I just read an article about max martin that credits people NOT being this way with his success..

Bruh, this why I said maybe you need to do some Googling. Anita was not going to be doing any new jack swing. Compositions was a deviation from the formula of her previous work and music of the times. Yet it's considered her best work by many(yes, even above rapture) and was a commercial success. She had no interest in conforming and was still a success. hence why your earlier comments about her only having two great albums is false. You haven't heard the music and done the research.

You can keep pushing the narrative that she was done in the 80s, but the evidence provided says otherwise.

The evidence definitely says the quiet storm or whatever they wanted to label it, was still selling. Record companies pushed it out for whatever reason :mjpls:. I know a lot of heads felt like it was watered down soul and not raw, but it was mature and it came from somewhere just like their music did.

:leon:

What's your thoughts on Sade's 1st 4 albums. I'll put STP and LD over mostly anything out of that era.

I like Sade, but compared to Anita, it was safe and constrained. It was what "they" were looking for. Beautiful music, but without the drama. More Jazzy than soulful. Not as rich, or full though. Nothing wrong with that. Somewhat similar but IMO, the emotional journey wasn't there. Rolling Stone said Anita Baker was overly dramatic elevator music. Funny, I actually hear Sade in the elevator all the time.

Imagine Anita over those songs Babyface gave Toni Braxton for her first joint
She turn some of them down. Anita is dope. Very dope but she wasn't a pop star. I would put her in the same lane with Deniece Williams. Legends to true R&B fans like me.
