I don't personally enjoy their music, but it doesn't take a lot for me to figure out what their appeal is or was anyway...like rap's first big white act that made fun party music, makes sense in context...what I don't get so much (but have a pretty good reason as to why anyway) is how they maintained all the way through the 80's and well into the 90's with an outdated style...while their contemporaries like Run DMC and the like had long since been thrown in the bushes....they became something of proto-hipster critical darlings with an entire new generation of fans...
they also switched up their production without trying to follow trends etc where acts like Run DMC either didn't change up or didn't keep up when they did change. but their fan base is the main reason for them staying relevant because the typical Hip Hop fan these days is not a Beasties fan.

i loved the Beastie Boys when they first dropped..

the appeal....it was a combo of Rick Rubin's groundbreakin production, their live shows, wild videos, Ad Rock's unique whiny voice, Mca's unique grimey voice, they was white, didnt dress like rappers from the hood they dressed like white boys, they rapped over hard rock n roll samples like Run Dmc but it fit them more because of their wild personalitys

and yeah, like dude was saying Ice Cube always gives them props and says the first group he was in (CIA) they tried to sound like the Beastie Boys

it's one of those things that's hard to understand in retrospect

but their sound was new, and very influential. cats like Cube are always talking about how they were trying to imitate the Beasties

it's hard to understand now, but songs like Paul Revere were groundbreaking. on that song they're talking about drinking beer, guns, fights, and doing "her with the wiffle-ball bat". that stuff really wasn't in the music at the time

Yep. If you lived it you understand, but its hard to explain. I remember being a kid and older cats had boom boxes blasting "Girls, Girls..." I had never heard anything like that...

I think that's what a lot of this thread comes down to. cats don't like that old school shyt. that's fine, but then it shouldn't be a mystery why you don't like the Beastie Boys

I like a lot of 80s hip-hop. I grew up in the generation that followed that era (born in 87), but I still found it pretty easy to get into later. The Beastie Boys though never did anything for me. :yeshrug:
