IIRC in the book ending, Will's character not only survives, but it's revealed that he was the problem in the first place. He was really the one doing cruel experiments on the mutants which is why the mutants were so pissed with him.

They could easily go with that angle too, but I'm not sure where that leads versus the other 2 endings. The theatre ending is left field and the home movie version is closer to the real thing.
He could have survived the explosion by hiding inside a fridge anyways :lolbron:

The book ends on the day of his death but you’re mostly right about the other stuff.

Because Neville was the last man on earth he was basically the boogie man of the vampires. Going out in the day and slaughtering and kidnapping them. He the vampires “Legend” so to speak.

I’m pretty sure that Neville was the last regular human and he was killing/testing on the vampires but there was another segment of society like the girl who didn’t fully turn and they were hunting all the vampires down too so things can go back to normal but they found Neville and wanted to kill him too because he was the last regular human and they wanted to publicly execute him to usher in the new world so they can feel that they are normal. The girls job was to entrap him and get Neville out his bunker.

I may have it mixed up though since it’s been awhile.

Will was really meant to be the villain of the movie. That's why they changed the ending.

The creatures had humanity but Will did not see that and was killing and experimenting on them like a mad scientist.

But people did not want to see Will as "the bag guy". So they changed it so that Will sacrifices himself to save humanity.
