Wu-Tang Clan “Triumph” (1997)
DIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY:
“It was the first million dollar rap video. When Steve Rifkind asked me, I said, ‘Are you sure about this record? There’s no chorus!’ He says “Trust me, its gonna be the biggest record of the year. Only Wu-Tang could pull this off.’ So, I set up the video—Joseph Kahn was my cinematographer. I hear that they want eleven Suburbans—they each want their own. They each also want $50,000 worth of gear, and they told me all their designers. So first day, these guys are walking in one at a time, and each guy walks into the dressing room, and walks out with plastic bags filled with all the clothes. I called Steve like, ‘They’re stealing all the clothes!’ He’s like, ‘Don’t worry, let them have it.’”
“It’s a five day shoot, and it’s crazy. The greatest fukkin’ experience, they’re eating mushrooms the whole time. Ol’ Dirty never shows up. I was like, Oh my god, this is fukking insane! The most fun I ever had. After shooting ends, they all leave to go on tour in Europe, but Ghost never would travel, because he had diabetes. So he checks into a hotel, and they said, ‘Yo Ghost, you watch Brett, and watch over that edit, man. White devil could fukk it up!” So, we’re in the edit room, and we call the group on speakerphone. And it’s the funniest thing, this is embedded in my memory. They’re all on the phone like, ‘White muthafukkin’ devil, man, tryin’ to rob us motherfukker!’ And Ghost is looking at me while on speakerphone, just winking at me like, I love you man! [laughs].”
“So three days into the edit, I get a call that Ghost had had been kicked out of like eleven hotels, and I’m like, ‘Why were you kicked out?’ He’s like, ‘I don’t know man, I got fukked up, and I just start breaking shyt. Can you come get me? I got no place to stay.’ So I let him stay at my house. Suddenly my phone rings, and it’s Steve Rifkind, ‘Whats going on?’ I go, ‘Nothing, I’m just bringing Ghost over my house ’cause he got kicked out of the hotel.’ Then there’s silence on the other end of the phone. I say, ‘Whats wrong?’ He goes, ‘I gotta call you back.’ Five days later, he calls me up and goes, ‘Are you okay? Oh my God, you scared the shyt outta me, man. How can you let this guy stay at your house? I don’t even let these guys know where I live!’ I go, ‘What do you mean? He’s the nicest guy in the world.’ He goes, ‘You don’t know what Ghostface has? He hallucinates, he hears voices like kill your mom, kill your mom. He has to be medicated because he has homicidal thoughts.’ So a month goes by, and I would edit all day, and Ghost would just chill at my house until we finished. A month later, I’m with my girlfriend in the backyard, and the cat starts going fukking crazy and starts digging into the dirt. We dig up a bucket of fried chicken. Ghost buried a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken in the backyard. How fukkin’ freaky is that?”

RZA is top 5 DOA producer, a legend, a visionary, and every other accolade you can think of
Yet I feel Rae had a point about wanting to do a movie (with DiCaprio on board to get it done) instead of this
The series in general was underwhelming. We did get some dope shyt (recording Method Man ep, RZA sample process for Protect Ya Neck ep, and the Divine ep this season were the standouts). The rest of the series was whatever, largely due to the compressed timeline and the actors.
The acting outside of dudes that played Divine (best in the series), Power, ODB, and Rae was complete dog shyt
WZA was a HORRIBLE decision by RZA. I still can't believe he handpicked him. Easily the worst actor (a damn shame) with the wack ass robotic voice and inflection.
Dave East...FOH.
Dudes that played Ghost and Deck just couldn't get it together, it was like student actors in their first role and shyt. Yes everyone has to start somewhere but that's why there's theater, indie films, web series, etc.

It feels like it came and went when it could have been so much more. I'm with Rae on this one. A movie would have been better.
A movie would have actually been worse. Look at the Aretha Franklin film. you can't pack a legendary career into 2 hours . That works for some people that have had their careers cut short, but the performance must be legendary for you to forget they are leaving things out.

A movie that covers 91-97 (start with RZA and GZA getting jerked and end with the release of Forever) could run 2.5 hours and tell the story. Rae has said he wanted to model it on Straight Outta Compton (which should have ended with Eazy's death- all the Tupac stuff was unnecessary and not part of NWA's story).

Instead we got 3 seasons of WZA and Dave East fukkin up every scene.

I don't know.. 2.5 hours doesn't seem like enough for 9 members along with Power and Divine. That wasn't even enough for 6 members of NWA(they wrote Arabian Prince out of the history). It would have basically been a story about Rza, ODB, and Meth. The 3 most popular members with a bit of Rae and Ghost sprinkled in. Deck, U God, MK, and Gza would have been left out in the cold.

Also, even though they didn't use Meth as much, it really highlights that Meth was the ultimate team player even though anyone else in that situation woulda outgrown Wu-Tang and gone off on their own. Any time Wu needed Meth he's held it down.

Rae shytting on the live instrumentation saying "this shyt dont even got no drums on it son" had me rollin

You ain't making no damn sense. So you complain about compressed timeline and the actors but somehow that would be solved by having to compress the story down a whole lot more to fit into a two and a half hour movie? Make it make sense.

Just like I thought they compressed way too much in this final season. I actually loved the final episode. Loved the show overall but it badly needed at least a fourth season to flesh out a lot of the stories told in season 3. For one we definitely needed that classic scene of Meth/U-God/Ghost arguing on the tour bus. I would've like to see more of Meth's rise to superstardom and all the problems he had dealing with that. A Redman cameo. Hell even the Meth/Big relationship while Rae and Ghost beefed with him and if that caused problems in the clan. The legal drama some of the members faced especially in the early years and the problems that caused. It was after Forever but would've been great seeing the clan growing away from Rza and Divine. The Clan's reaction when momentum slowed and that started getting negative feedback from their albums. Basically all we got is the rise and hints at the fall but not really.

Now I take it back. This season should've been split into two seasons with season 4 ending with the Rage tour and the Hot97 drama. Imagine how dope a season 4 ending with Wu performing at Summer Jam and it ending with them yelling fukk Hot97 with clips of Hot97 execs (or the parent company) saying Wu-Tang is banned.

A movie would have much better actors (hopefully) and won't have fantasy allegorical half hour scenes about Return to 36 Chambers, OB4CL and LS, 3 classic albums that got the cartoon treatment on the series.

People conplained too much a out the fantasy eps

Howmany times you wanna watch them fight over or love beats.

Less info got put out this season than any other

People give the rza actor tookuch shyt too. I think this season he got it right.

Rae really good this year.

But man. Rae is such a hater. He wants to be let in on wverything yet he aint a boss. Hating on reunited beat. Wow.

Dudes have no vision except what they think the hood will like.

And i dont get it. All of them basically said they got ripped off by wu wear. Rza puts this out like they didnt. Which is it.

And btw. Did rza get 6 million for bobby digital?!!!!

Rza by playing nice, finessed the labels something wicked. Something the other guys never learned. He to this day gets checks and features from the labels.

What rza did is really phenomenal. 10 guys. He put on like 30 more. Noone put that many people on. And gave them a career by sharing that symbol.

When he goes. Hip hop will never be the same. Rza is on mount rushMore of hip hop and if not him, his symbol.

I just finished raekwons book yesterday.
Then the last episode of the show today

I'm kinda torn... They could have done so much more... But then I think what they have done ...its so insane.

Getting nine people to get on the same page is such a huge ask and when you throw a wildcard like odb into the mix it had to have been damn near impossible.

Every time anything is mentioned on the show I went and listened to that song/album... And now I just want more. 😂
