Considering warfare has changed since 1776 (thanks AJ), why would guns be the government's obstacle to taking away our rights away altogether?
How would an assault rifle stop the government from going 1984?

I just can't see that ever happening, you would have to have the cooperation of such a huge number of people to create a country "1984" style. You'd have to brainwash millions of people. Information transfers too quickly, the internet would save us 
and I don't think it will ever be possible for the government to regulate it, no matter how hard they try, the nerds will find a way.

if they had full control over the military and didn't give a fukk about how many people they killed they could easily take over.. But if they didn't kill all the dissenters quickly they'd start having a guerilla war going on.

The problem is people always responding with "It will never happen" when it has happen countless times in history. History always repeats itself. It's like people think Govt wouldn't do things but turn around and do them.

That's mainly because the US tries to win "hearts and minds" if they just said fukk it and threw collateral damage completely in the bushes Afghanistan would be a parking lot right now.
The same applies to us, if they didn't care about collateral damage we'd be fukked. And in crushing a revolution I think they wouldn't care about winning hearts and minds.
The trigger pullers in the military are largely from the lower classes. Would they fire on their families? It's an interesting question...
Information doesn't change the fact people get in a comfort zone. People have gotten lazy more now than any time in history and have allowed their rights to be taken away one step at a time.
