After the filibuster is broken and dems pass popular legislation the next complaint will be, "Why did they break the filibuster just to pass centrist milquetoast legislation."
No. He needs to carve out exception like the pubs did to pass their legislation. They gave you the blueprints. Use itHe needs to take their significant others hostage and force the issue. Amirite
All I see is a bunch of George Bush and Co complaining about it.So is the Afghan withdrawal going to be the first Biden foreign policy disaster? That seems to be how its being portrayed?
@AP
BREAKING: The Biden administration announces it will begin evacuation flights in late July for Afghans who aided the U.S. military. apne.ws/AlspBNU
When will this reconciliation be done?
Really shows how performative and fake this is. We waged war during the Civil War. Yet can't break a filibuster, and you want to compare this to THAT?
I don't even think nuking the filibuster is a great idea but in the context of Biden's speech, if he is unwilling to do it why does anything he said matter. It doesn't. In terms of my views though...while I'm not opposed to breaking the filibuster I think people are being sold a bill of goods on this. Republicans will win back the senate one day. And they'll have 51 votes to shyt can whatever voting rights democrats pass. Not to mention the Supreme Court. All of this distracts from the real problem: the only solution is local on the state level. You need to win governor seats, and have enough seats in state senates+houses to pass voting rights bills. Because clearly a federal law is going to be destroyed - either by senate republicans in the short term, or the Supreme Court in the long term.
Even if they do this we’re left with a situation where potentially every two years, voting rights are gained or lost via 51 votes. That’s not sustainable. There is no downside for republicans getting rid of “government control of elections” by eliminating this when they take over. Sure democrats can re-instate it next time they take over but how is this good policy? I don’t think people thought this through.They're going to carve out constitutional rights from the filibuster just like budget items and court nominations were.
And yes, a full abolition of the filibuster is begging for trouble. 18% of the country elects 52 Senators. Democrats won't hold a supermajority by being a super-progressive party.
