He doesn't have a choice if he wants to stay speaker. The MAGA caucus explicitly stated that if he doesn't get on board, he'd be replaced with someone who would. And they expect those who will be part of the inquiry to be designated as essential so they're not affected by the coming government shutdown the GOP is going to force.

I feel like this will backfire and help Dems in swing states, but I can't tell if I'm being optimistic and biased by my region (NY/NJ is pretty blue, though we've got plenty of conservatives mixed in).

Republicans do any and everything except govern and tackle issues that matter. Fake impeachment inquiries, making it against the law for men to wear lipstick, arresting and prosecuting pregnant women who try to abort a pregnancy, try to take away black ppl’s rights…then wonder why they have lost every big election recently. Ppl are TIRED of these manufactured culture wars, they want affordable health care, not having to worry about going broke after they retire.
