I think people also aren't understanding that College Dropout dropped like two months after Beg For Mercy. So people were still on G Unit heavy even though College Dropout ended up bigger than that album and the G Unit solos that came out that year.

Also, Kanye had an impact on Dip Set's run as he was featured on Cam's "Down and Out" and produced "Dip Set Forever". He was credited with "Down and Out" on production, but later clarified that his cousin Brian Miller produced it.

No rapper was bigger than Kanye in 2004 except 50 and maybe Kast.

During that era, they weren't. Kanye had huge songs for other artists who weren't on The Roc. And even on The Roc, one of Jay's biggest singles During that era was "'03 Bonnie & Clyde".

Just blaze beats were more popular breh.

O3 bonnie?? All they did was sample Makaveli. That song wasn't poppin like that anyway. They just pushed it extra hard.

How was Blaze beats more popular when Kanye was more sought after during that era?

And act like the singles Just produced weren't pushed extra hard.

"She got a light skinned friend look like Michael Jackson
Got a dark skinned friend look like Michael Jackson"

He was kinda lukewarm at first, but once that line dropped he was put over.

At that very moment, throwback jerseys became obsolete and you needed a closet full of polos. :pachaha:

Y'all need to stop lying y'all wasn't bumping Common the time College Dropout dropped because after Like Water he dropped Electic Circus and by the way y'all nikkas talk about Yeezus y'all did not fukk with Common left field experimental album Electic Circus, y'all left him for dead and the only people I know that love that album are the hardcore Okayplayer Heads.

So y'all need to stop frontin, It was Kanye who brought Common back on Get'Em High, it was Kanye who put the battery in his back again when he came with to me Hip Hop Quotable of the year and produced his 2nd Classic album BE, Kanye resurrected Common from the dead and made him who he is today, he gave Common a 2nd life

Y'all stop frontin
I think Be is overrated but this is facts. Electric Circus turned off A LOT of people

Doesn't matter whether he rapped or not. We're talking about beats and most of the production Kanye did for other artists, he wasn't even featured on. So I don't know what his rapping had to do with anything.

"03 Bonnie & Clyde" was a wack song IMO, but that's neither here or there. Most singles from major artists get a push, fewer of them actually become huge hits. Again, that's beside the point. People actually liked that song. It was the beginning of Jay/Beyonce songs and fueled the rumors of them being a couple. It helped establish Beyonce outside of Destiny's Child.

Even dismissing "Bonnie & Clyde", Kanye had a lot of beats during that time that were popular. Scarface's "Guess Who's Back", Talib's "Get By", Dip Set's "Champions", Lil' Kim's "Came Back For You" all come to mind.

Eastside of that Motor
I was in HS and I was in love with the roc a fella chipmunk sound so I was sold off first listen.

Mayonnaise colored Benz was the coldest line of all time. And whenever we heard an original sample for the first time it was always “This is Ye sample! :krs:

Also it’s gotta be scrubbed off the internet but does anyone remember Kanye’s first TRL interview and he was humble as shyt and talking about how he’ll never been good enough to be on TRL again. I cannot find it anywhere

I started high school around this time.... there was definitely a lot of hype around College Dropout. I just remember that 50 Cent/G-Unit, Dipset, Sean Paul, Beyonce, Jay-Z pretty much ran radio. Luda too. But College Dropout was definitely anticipated.
