My parents didn't like me watching Ren & Stimpy which I get looking back-- but they were on that bullshyt with The Simpsons too :what: i almost NEVER got to watch unless we had an early evening service and I dipped off to my friend's house.

SAME HERE!

My father was FORBADE us from watching Ren & Stimpy, The Simpsons and Beavis & Butthead. I completely understand Beavis & Butthead and R&S but Simpsons was tame as hell. I remember when I was like 14-15 and could watch whatever and I finally started watching Simpsons episodes I was literally like “This is IT??!!?”

All this stuff about how "my generation was just cooler maaaan" is nonsense.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out in 1988.

It was a box office smash and revitalized interest in animation beyond the toy drive stuff of broadcast networks.

Cable television also emerged during this time and didnt have to adhere to the same censorship standards as broadcast networks. They capitalized on this new interest in animation going into a new decade.

A whole generation of animators who grinded at places like Hanna Barbera studios in the 1980s, working on children's cartoons like "the Snorks," including John K, fully embraced cable and the freedom it brought aspiring animators.

Likewise cable networks, including MTV, TBS, and Nickelodeon were still new, experimental and wanted to give animators creative freedom to their own visions without any of the restrictions of merchandising and censorship required for broadcast networks.

John K was a very energetic and talented animator who had the blessing of Bob Clampett and others. The Nick executives liked his ideas and it was a deal.

So how did he get away with all the gross out humor and adult innuendo?

The answer is he didn't.

See, the original pilot episodes of Ren and Stimpy, if you go back and check them out, we're not that bad. It was creative, it was silly, slap stick, a bit violent. Just edgy enough to compliment the light hearted Doug and Rugrats as the execs intended, but not enough to frighten kids.

It wasn't until the show was already green lit, funded and in production that John K went rogue. His writing became increasingly morbid and more adult. Nick executives became more concerned and they did censor some of his stuff. But the show was successful, so they tolerated some of K's writing under a watchful eye.

Eventually a combination of creative differences and habitually missing deadlines lead to his ousting off the show. He was replaced, and the show, while still edgy, was toned down compared to those early seasons.

Sorry, I just love my cartoons yall.

My moms didn't ban Ren and Stimpy but I'll never forget the day I was watching it, and it was the episode where Ren wakes up and can't open his eyes because they was crusty....

My mom's walked in just to see what I was doing. She saw that close up frame of Ren's "crust eyes" and ran off ready to hurl.

Also I remember lots of parents back in the day banning the Simpsons in their home simply because it "depicts kids disrespecting adults."

Don't know why people front like 90s parents was all edgy and cool.

The 90's was the last time we saw classic parenting because it soon died and went to hell around 2000..just look at their offspring :scust:

It was pretty random back then.
Me and my pops watched Ren & Stimpy whenever it came on. All the farting and dumb shyt made him laugh. He checked me out of school to go to the movies with him to see “Beavis & Butthead do America”.

My parents didn’t really care what we watched or read, they just wanted us to have an understanding of what we were seeing and were happy that we read so much. They made us understand that certain things may not be real, but there were real people in some of those situations. If a titty came out on a movie, they didn’t care because they already taught us about sex Ed. When we freddy Krueger puppy Johnny Depp through the bed they knew we understood that it wasn’t real.

They let us learn a lot on our own, but made themselves approachable enough to ask them about things. They weren’t the “cool” parents. We respected their position as most kids would, and we knew they weren’t our “friends”. They just didn’t take an easy way out, and looking back, they were very diligent about how they raised us because it the most important thing in the world to them.

I remember sitting with my mom and sister watching the “Brenda’s got a baby” video and being able to ask my mom what a prostitute was because the word was on a news paper headline. She explained what one was and Brenda’s situation. I would ask my parents about cuss words and insults and they’d explained what they meant and why I shouldn’t say that shyt. They wanted us to see everything life offered, good and bad, and understand that life isn’t a prewritten story. Our decision, surroundings, and actions go into how our days end. If I read found an adult situation, cuss word, or something crazy in a book I’d just ask and they’d explain why or what it meant.

Depending on where we lived, the restrictions we saw, could go either way. Some of my friends couldn’t watch much of anything that wasn’t on PBS, some couldn’t listen to certain things, and could only read books they found in the kids section at the library. Some of my other friends’ parents didn’t give not one single fukk about what they consumed, and didn’t care to explain it.

We watched that shyt as a family then lol. It’s crazy because, from reading these responses, it’s like parents were treating the Simpsons like what South Park really was lol. My mom was DISGUSTED with SP but my dad watched it with us.

They watered down Beavis & Butthead. It used to come on really late at night and because a few people tried to recreate it. They watered the show down to mainly music videos the movie was trash too.
