it says that we're a fairly new country that needs to celebrate some sort of foundation myth in an attempt to forge national pride/unity....just like every other society in human history.
to be fair Columbus was a product of his times. But again it was a move to appease Italian Americans. If we want to be real we should be celebrating Amerigo Vespucci dude is Italian, the Americas are named after him and he knew that he was not in India.

Vast majority of americans just observer it as a day off from school and work. The celebration of the man himself is something that was not done until the early 1900 and at the time it was just away for Italians and Catholics to show pride about themselves. It seems like tread starter did no research on the subjuect and was just looking for some type of argument.
