The HUnger Games was a good series of books. Not a great series of books(Harry Potter/Dark Tower) but nowhere near the bottom of the barrel(Twilight/House of Night) and I read them as fast as I could. Of course that was a year or more apart with them. I re-read them recently and they are still good.
As to being like Battle Royale. I immediately thought of this when I was reading the first book the first time(I read a galley of it a year or so before it was released) I immediately called it a younger/more pc version of Battle Royale. After reading the entire series, it isn't exactly, especially in the third book which is completely different than the first two, but you probably get more character interaction/development within the arena in Royale, and I read the book, saw the movie, and read the manga versions of Battle Royale. Outside of the arena you get a shyt load of stuff from Hunger games(mostly because Royale has nothing outside of the arena) but you still see Katniss as kind of superficial.
The twist at the end of the third was some shyt though. You go from to to to eventually. I would say anyone who has a a higher reading level or is above the age of 12-13 could handle it, but not fully understand it.
