Gross but I believe that was a standard set by the diamond industry so it benefits them.

Having bought one recently:

• Research and find a good jeweler
• Good see them solo and get an understanding of how engagement rings and their buying process works
• Take your woman with you after your initial meeting (and the time is right) It will save you a lot of headache and potentially $
• Not all women know what they actually want so better to include them in the process than buy blindly and get something they don’t want or possibly spend more than you have too.
