:beli:Nobody shytted on The Source until Benzino (who is half White) and Dave Mays (who is White) ruined it

:mindblown: Not when we're talking about Black culture!!!!

That would be like saying that a magazine about Native American culture only has 1% of their writers being Native American, but that's okay because there aren't that many Native Americans in the America.

Dude, it's OUR culture, WE are the ones who should be writing about it.:damn:

how did Dave Mayes "ruin" it when he started it and employed a majority black/hispanic writers :mjlol:

We have too many innovative minds on this site to have not formulate something like Vice or Complex already .... The Coli has the potential to evolve way more than what it currently is ... we just have to put the redundant disputes to a cease or atleast reduce it so we can come to a common objective
there a lot of Black folks who work for this very site..

folks ain't trying to come to no "common" nothing.. most hate Black women.. laugh, or ignore Black artists we try putting them onto.. call legends "flabby", and corny sh!t like that..

this thread, is jokes.. instead of pushing something moving us forward, y'all too busy crying about what these White folks ain't doing for us..

let these folks know who y'all wanna hear, around here.. what y'all want to discuss.. but, that ain't happening.. let's be real- folks would rather get daps & rep, than anything..

That's all I can think about whenever these complaints are brought up...look how much content we provide here...

I know I type a lot of crap, I'm not that confident in my skills as a PROFESSIONAL writer though, but damn these publications probably have editors, why couldn't you have 3 or 4 people with good writing skills edit content from posters willing to chip in and make this shyt grow to it's potential.

I just get sick of the whining..not @ OP specifically but it's like we bypass what's possible just to point fingers. What's stopping us from being a more authentic "complex"? They already shark our shyt...hell they even recruited one of our legends :damn:

This is what I was trying to say, but to put it into a more blunt and elequent fashion as so much not to disappoint or turn off potential viewers.

The issue is. Not about us being "qualified" to write about our own culture. It's about the rest of society's willingness to even listen to us or take us seriously about our own artforms and culture when they have been conditioned not to. Or even more bluntly put...the notion that most are willingly too racist to take black people seriously or want to read our thoughts and opinions on a mainstream level.

We can and we do talk, but do they want to listen to us? Without feeling some type of way?

This is why I dislike the idea of cultural gatekeepers and cultural appropriation. There's always going to be leverage in the favor of the dominant culture co opting the cultures of others and that's due to racism and conditioning.

Now I'ma say this...knowing full well how full of shyt I am...but the real question is when is at what point do "we", as in the Coli start to put our bid in? We type a ton of opinionated drivel on here every day, a lot of it way more nuanced and grounded in the actual culture than a lot of these clowns but here we are...

:francis:

We already have a start with album review threads. After so many comments, a group of posters(whoever chooses to do it) could write a summarization of what was said in the thread. We already have the dap and rep system. The best review could be voted on and that's what "published"

If this could conjure up a more constructive dialogue, then this thread is not a failure in my eyes. Especially one that's really not discussed too much due to obvious reasons. There's a lot of friction and tense vibes that come with discussing the idea of cultural gatekeeping in regards to music journalism. Cause let's face it. At it's core is racism and that makes peopel uncomfortable.

Now that VIBE is dead, this is what you have left. That publication had a shyt ton of black and brown people as writers and editors and now that's done. Killed by publications like VICE, Complex Media Group (who have sought to buy out alot of so-called "urban" media and fashion websites run by Marc Ecko), FACT, and others cause they couldn't compete with their online platforms.

Those writers have been hung out to dry.
Is XXL still relevant?

I agree. If this leads towards the actual monetization of black art and culture that allows black people to profit off of their cultural output as one new internet platform, then that's cool.

I'm done dwelling on problems and am more about entertaining solutions.

Not like they used to be. I would like to believe their popularity declined as the print medium declined in popularity, they took a hit like many other publications and weren't able to keep up with the solely web based media publications.

Do we even discuss the XXL freshman class anymore? I feel like XXL's better days are past them.

gq is not our culture, nor is new york times... some of the other publications have limited focus on hiphop...so i think we should also look at the bigger picture other than just the number of staff. how much of the publication is dedicated to "black culture"?

This is the ultimate point of my thread. But somehow, the idea of black people wanting something of their own is seen as "dangerous" or "detrimental" to whatever or whoever.

I salute the brothers and sisters making moves especially now in this internet era. There are more than ever now. I would not want to forget them.

But to not acknowledge the fact that there are mental barriers that have permeated because of the aforementioned would be a disservice to the reality of the situation. It's easier said than done. We could easily pool together enough capital to make something happen, but it's all about those who are really willing to commit to it.
