Y'all love to say this "it's not just rappers" tripe on this board but as evidenced by over 75% of the threads on here y'all really don't know shyt about any genres outside of hip hop and R&B. You really aren't qualified to say anything. Only in rap and R&B are there endless amounts of artists going bankrupt cause black folks aint smart with money like that nor to we have the money or resources to take care of artists and they end up getting exploited by others cause we don't own the labels and by and large aint the a&rs.
Who are these "metal cats"? I'll wait.
Exactly, African-Americans as a whole are terrible with money and never look at the bigger picture. The financial illiteracy of athletes and entertainers is just a microcosm of a bigger problem in that community.
That's why they will always be at the bottom of the barrel in society.
MeatLoaf, Ted Nugent, Guns n Roses, The singer from Twisted Sister, Lamb of God and Sevendust.Y'all love to say this "it's not just rappers" tripe on this board but as evidenced by over 75% of the threads on here y'all really don't know shyt about any genres outside of hip hop and R&B. But none of these people you mentioned are struggling financially today...MeatLoaf, Ted Nugent, Guns n Roses, The singer from Twisted Sister, Lamb of God and Sevendust.
Rock in general you have Billie Joel, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, half of Fleetwood Mac, Goo Goo Dolls, Leonard Cohen, Courtney Love and Pete Doherty.
Countless indie bands got put in horrible deals as well and wound up broke.
My angle is that Jay don't get 100% royalties, Warner/Chappell see's a piece of it, somewhere 25%+ at least.I dont think you understand dude..... they administer his publishing, says in the article
meaning they collect on behalf for him... he still owns it

he owns his royalties.... you can do a deal where a company administers on your behalf meaning that they may charge a percentage of what they collect, this is different from them owning a percentage of your royalties....
when the deal expires they stop collecting a fee, while if they own a percentage of your royalties they get paid forever....
clear difference
Lets be honest. Alot of us are just not used to having money. Alot of us have been broke for so long we don't know what to do with money when we get it. We're not taught about the essentials of ownership or entrepreneurship. Owning things that increase in value is essential for growth and security in this capitalistic society. The problem is rap has this mentality of living fast and Yolo and all that...not building anything for the future.
Which is why I hated when Tyler the Creator dissed Dr. Boyce Watkins, one of the few upstanding black men out there who teaches financial literacy and wealth building classes aimed at the black community.
I salute the rappers who own their publishing, Masters, and their careers that are actually teaching the younger generations, but it saddens me to know that they are few and far between. And the whole "rappers aren't the only ones that are struggling" mantra is played. Last time I checked most of these rock bands, djs, and whatever are white and have majority fan bases and benefit from white privilege. They have safety nets so they can manage to take losses and still survive with some semblance of financial security intact. Cause they own the labels, the promotion companies, the publishing firms, the legal firms...etc. we dont.
Thats the point I'm making, he don't see 100% of publishing royalties, my bad, shoulda been more cleareryou can do a deal where a company administers on your behalf meaning that they may charge a percentage of what they collect
