How do you pitch an idea without it getting stolen?

The university owns all rights to research done by its members, including students, on their facilities unless otherwise stated and approved by administration.

However, you’re actually in a good position. Your best route would be consulting head researchers/professors and trying to work out a deal with them to move it forward. I’ve seen the university relinquish the rights before without too much hassle, hell they might even sponsor it.

It’s definitely a possibility - a lot of great ideas start from campuses. They’ll let you go ahead, hell they might even be in contact with incubators that will help you out.

But I come from a startup school so idk how much applies to you. I’ve worked with a few incubators before bc I tried to start a couple startups on campus.
I ain’t see none of this shyt in no fine print!
Omg all of this is a revelation.
The first intervention I’m not too worried about because I’m first author on peer reviewed studies validating the work and I’ve presented research on it and all.

But the second idea I’m making money off of now is what I’m worried about because I’m just winging it. Developed a curriculum, getting paid by the parents, meeting with students once a week. $1000 per month. My dad told me to take out taxes on myself or Imma get raped by the IRS next year. I need a tax lawyer, a copyright lawyer, and a business lawyer.
I’m mostly worried that

A.) some weird ass law gon pop out of the bushes and try and take me to jail for some shyt I didn’t know
B.) one of these families gon start talking and add up how much my black ass is making off just four kids monthly...and then steal my shyt and have their CEO daddies repackage it. I got Copyright © 2020 Booksnrain at the bottom...

Don’t steal my shyt! :damn:

I mean, I’d honestly consult a professional on this. Easiest thing to do would be to start with asking some of the research faculty in the department it was published in. I don’t quite know what your idea is, but maybe someone at the business school can help too (if there is one on campus). Try emailing a couple faculty who you think could point you in the right direction. I would not tell them you already started a business, just that you’re thinking about it and want to know if there would be any issues and what steps you need to take. Under no circumstances do you need to inform any other students you worked with (if any).

Idk how your school is but there were multiple startup courses and experts on my campus. Who had connections to lawyers, etc. In one of my classes a student posed a similar question and the instructor (who worked in venture) said that it wasn’t a big deal and more often then not they don’t care even though they could legally or they might want to sponsor it since it looks good for them,

It doesn’t sound like it’s a huge thing, so I’d consult some legal experts on this just to cover my tracks. I doubt the university would even care, but you never know. Like tbh there’s so much research done and most faculty offices aren’t even equipped to handle shyt like that

It’s moreso an issue if you went on to create a multi-million dollar businesses and receive funding without informing the university, all it takes is them taking notice and putting a wrench in everything.

I would have never thought to do some shyt like this. Lmao!

Today I had a meeting with a department chair at a university who was using coded language to basically tell me an idea I developed was making rounds. I got the lil copyright shyt at the bottom, but yeah I need to tighten up. :wow:
If I see somebody become a millionaire off that shyt, I’d be straight Frank Castle mode.

this is common practice with copywritten material.

:picard::to:I’m just trying to make a lil money on the side and take advantage of this virtual from home shyt.:damn:

Tell these a$$holes to leave my shyt alone. Go make your own ideas! Lol
Also idk if the research is published or not, but you do have options to seal it, if need be. I know a dude who put a 5 year lock on his thesis because he was in talks with a book publisher.

But yeah pause them colleges for now until you get your legal work in order. But it doesn’t sound like a bad situation, this is how startups get formed. If you can get some good trustworthy people on board they might be willing to contribute to starting the business for a cut of equity. You def need an advisor tho if you wanna do the startup route.

Yeah lots have apps and instructional materials they have sold, so I’ll ask for some advice.
You gave some great info thanks!!!
I doubt anybody gonna get me right now because I only got 4 kids, but people are starting to talk because I’m making progress with their children with the program.

Half the time I just be thinking out loud. Other times I’ve helped schools, administrators—just cuz they needed help and I knew em.

But educational consulting companies make fukking bank to do shyt I’ve done for free in the past. Never even really thought about it.:wow:

You can't patent or copyright ideas. If you're making something like a machine or anything that needs to be built, I'm sure you can patent the blueprint (if you have one). Ideas for a movie, tv, documentary, that shyt can't be copyright. If you wrote something, pitched it, and saw it on TV years later, you gotta make sure the finished product is like 80% of your idea. But you gotta have the script written down and have details about the pitch (or if you recorded it then that's good).

I thought I came up with the brilliant idea to make "I survived 2020" shirts.

Turns out nikkas started selling those months ago :aicmon:
lol! Your shirts could say “I didn’t survive 2020”

Yeah also if a teacher makes it using university resources it belongs to the school which is another problem

that shouldn’t stop you
:damn:
What's the idea?
:wtb::camby:
I’m Marie Kondo/Iyanla for unmotivated kids ages 14-18 and transitional adults 18-21. Kinda felt like a piece of shyt for commercializing services and instruction that used to be embedded in everyday school lessons...but there’s a need especially now with the Co-vid crisis and school chaos. I want a new car for Christmas, so...:yeshrug:
