I made an old school beat the other day, and the process was so simple it actually disappointed me. that shyt sounded like a finished product with just a sample and break. No mixing or nothing :ehh:

You might have just lucked out tho. How many times had you had a break where you had to layer the snare because it was too soft or play hats over the hats then turn them down til they matched or added a lil bump or even filtered out a lil bump to the kick?

Same for a sample having to filter out all the high so you get the bass to be prominent then layering that with the lows filtered out of the melody / sample so it doesn't just sound like a recorded loop.

Sometimes the gimme beats are good. Especially when you spend time on beats and have or get beat block.

Yep but back in the day the process of chopping a sample was harder and they didn't use computers etc. So they kept it simple but effective.

100%

Thats why it bugged me out. Im so used to finding the perfect snare to layer over a drum break, that was my first instinct ... but then it felt like I was trynna shoot an arrow through the arrow that hit the bullseye.

I know what you mean, your listening and your like "I can't be done....". You want to tweak shyt and instead of leaving it be you end up over producing it. :snoop: I have a couple of beats on my laptop I over produced. Stop while your ahead. It's like adding waaaaayy too much salt to your chili.

I definitely enjoy my beats that aren't finished or that I'm like " I could do this and this" vs the ones that I'm like "why the fukk did I do that?" Or " I want that out"

Exactly. My thought process is always "if it sounds this good right out the gate, I know Im creative enough to turn it into some next level shyt"

But a good beat is a good beat :ehh:
