I have a standard setting on my Kick/Snare/Hi-Hat/Percussion that doesn't really color the sound too much but does give it a bit more bump. If you pick good drumsounds you don't need to do a lot to them.

I have sensiheisers (so?!) mx8

Audio technica 40s or 50s are good to tho

Sennheisers are great, if you spend around 100 you'll get great value for money. I have the 40s and the bass isn't great on them, definitely spend the extra and get the 50s

I save presets of eq's for future use. Like if a I EQ a kick or a piano a way that I like for a track I just save that track as preset and boom you got a eq that you can easily use on any beat you want.

the problem with that is a different kick or a different piano is different from the one you used with the eq setting you liked on it. for example, say your kick preset has a nice bump at like 80hz, the "new" one you're putting it on might already be heavy in that range and not even need it. maybe your eq curve makes it more 'muddy' or there's too much mid-range for the track...whatever. or your piano, shyt, even if it's the exact same piano sound, if you're playing an octave or two higher or lower, then the frequencies you're dealing with aren't gonna be the same as the ones you set-up your preset for, so although you're cutting/boosting in the same areas, you're not gonna be cutting/boosting the same signal. there's really no such thing as one-size-fits-all eq/compressors/reverb/etc settings.

Are there producers out there who don't even mix/master their beats? That's what engineers are for, I'm assuming?

if you're talking about 'name' producers...then, yeah. a lot of them, most of them. but when you get to that level, that's the process. you make the beat, send it out to a mix guy, then when you're happy, you send it out for mastering. on there way there though, many of them definitely have learned to come up with solid mixes (especially the longer they've worked to "make it").

it's extremely difficult for anyone to take you seriously otherwise. cuz honestly, 9/10 times, a decent beat with a good mix beats a great beat with a shytty mix. if it sounds like something polished and put together, even if it's not as creative or interesting, it will keep people's attention far better and keep them listening more than some cool ass futuristic beat that sounds messy and amateurish. straight up. that's just the way it is. :yeshrug:

i'm kind of mashed, so this might not be a great analogy but when you're putting your beats out there, it's like a job interview. you could be the guy who walks in there with incredible ideas and skills to bring to the company, rocking the new kanye's and skinny jeans and shyt, looking like an a$$hole who's not taking this seriously...or you could be the guy who puts on your suit, marches in there with a little less ability and vision but takes that fukking job. cuz presentation matters. so just imagine when you be the best of both at the same time.

I think most MPC-Users back in the day never used to mix they beats. But that wasn't necessary if you had good sounds.
And it was usually only a sample + bass + drums which doesn't even need to be mixed a lot of times.
Truth

I made an old school beat the other day, and the process was so simple it actually disappointed me. that shyt sounded like a finished product with just a sample and break. No mixing or nothing :ehh:
