I'm using FL Studio 12. I can make beats, but I want to be able to EQ them properly. This includes EQ'ing both the melody (often a sample) and the drums.

I'm assuming that you EQ different each time, so how would I find out the techniques behind EQ'ing so I can make beats sound great every time? I can make pretty good beats right now, but I want to take my beats to the next level and be very precise with sounds. How can I do this with parametric EQ?

Yea just start EQing, it's gonna take you a while so be patient. Stay consistent and you'll see some good results in a few months
Just start playing around with parametric EQ until it sounds good?

Yea and do a little research like the YouTube tutorial dude posted above. Just try out the things he shows you and experiment.
You got a link to your stuff? Would love to check it out. Thanks for the response.

Eq is a broad term. It takes a longggggg time, song dependence, and personal tricks/preferences to "eq".

Notching, sidechaining, bells, panning. Start just learning.

have a purpose. have a reason. don't just blindly eq shyt and hope for the best. eqing is pretty straightforward in a technical sense. so really think about the "why" instead of the "how".

generally, i'd say use eq to cut out unwanted frequencies first and then worry about boosting shyt afterwards. why? cuz a lot of the time the cuts open up room for other things you want to accentuate, so they won't necessarily need a boost. for instance, and this is something you really should do on basically every mix imo, is put a high-pass on everything (even on cymbals and shyt) outside of the kick and bass. why? cuz the less the rest of the instruments interfere with that bottom-end frequency range the better for your kick and bass, cuz that's where those two elements reside. they'll sound clearer, bigger, have more power, etc. let them dominate that space in the mix.

mixing and making the beat "sound great" is much more than just eq though.

Are there producers out there who don't even mix/master their beats? That's what engineers are for, I'm assuming?

I think most MPC-Users back in the day never used to mix they beats. But that wasn't necessary if you had good sounds.
And it was usually only a sample + bass + drums which doesn't even need to be mixed a lot of times.

Izotope ozone 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 vsts are great for mixing beats once you put everything together..waves make a great plugin called rbass for the low end boost also

I eq by ear. I tend to break a lot of rules tho and eq frquencyantill it distorts to give it a wall of sound vibe. Each beat diff. U wont know how to eq unless ya sounds are good.

For exqmple u could have weak kicks n snares that need anlotnof additional frequency work needed

Or u already got a great aounding drum kit and dont meed to do much. Theres no concrete setting anyone can give you to just make everything pump correctly
