Yea you can start by just googling the terms, learning about the difference between the two etc.

Also, google notable managers or managers of artists you like eg.

Steve Stoute
Anthony Saleh
Kevin Liles
Russel Simmons

And just watch their interviews and soak up everything they say.

Or, you said your friend has a manager already right ? You can even reach out to him /her and ask how they got into it.
Bet I’ll start researching. Thanks a lot man.
Word I know all those guys except Anthony

I’m not sure my friend has a manager but I’ll ask him.
And I know you said I should pursue if I’m passionate but what other people are saying above you are making sense. It may not be ideal but I’ll do the research etc. cause I may be better off just pursuing my degree that I just got :yeshrug:don’t take that as a lack of passion. I just gotta be realistic feel me

Pay for shyt :yeshrug:
I went to a studio session for an artist none of you ever heard of at Larry Gold studios.
The manager was paying for EVERYTHING. hundreds of dollars for the session, even buying her clothes and paying for her truck i believe
He obviously didn't make much ROI cause i never heard shyt she put out

Bro I ain’t telling you not to take what others say into consideration cause it can help you make informed decisions but you don’t wanna look back 10 years and go “damn, I should’ve tried...” you don’t get that time back.

Being a manager for an artist is a largely thankless endeavor.

If you're not already financially sound, this isn't a career option. If you're broke, don't fukking bother. You need to already have money on deck so you're not making bad choices for fast money.

This is for people who already have deep connections in the music biz.

If you were a promoter, you probably dipped your toes into dealing with agents and managers already. That's an in.

Right now is a terrible time for management. There's no shows, which is generally how artists make money. You gonna take your 15-20% cut of what they're making right? But right now they're not making much. Did you know you only get $5-6000 when you hit a million streams? That's not going to pay your bills.

If you're really keen on being a manager, don't work with rappers. They're lazy, idealistic and mostly lack the ability to articulate their goals.

More often than not, they'll drop you immediately if the artist gets approached by somebody with a bigger bag/more connections. That's just how it works, it's biz never personal.

That's just my two cents as a music industry professional.
I am broke and in debt from college...I still wanna be involved in music though

I definitely feel you. I’m gonna keep doing research cause that’s what made me make this thread, is the part about not getting that time back

Seek out an internship at a label, management company or agency. Make yourself an asset over time and get hired in any role you can.

Or hustle on your own and become a concert promoter, community radio or podcast host, interviewer, etc etc. You gotta make connections and network constantly.

This is just like any other job except right in this climate and pandemic, working in the music biz is not a growth industry. Until touring comes back, shyt sucks $$$$.
