That’s a real broad question but managing an artist can range from any task like booking shows, running his / her sm, helping him craft songs to taking care of the finances. Threes really no set rules. Do you have friends that rap or sing ? Start by helping them out. Help them get gigs, book features etc

Why would you wanna mange a rapper lol? Managers hella under appreciated and do all the leg work. Especially for an up and coming rapper. My homie but was a manager and from what I noticed, dude cared more about the artist success than the artist. He never got a major deal, but he did have a few offers from major labels that they ended up turning down cause the contracts were so bad. But ironically, he says if he could do it over he would take one of the deals cause it would have got him in the door of the industry and could have parlayed that into more success. He quit after his last group fukked up an opportunity where they wanted to move the whole group to Atlanta. I forgot the label. They was gonna have them in singing and dancing training and had a townhouse for them to live in and shyt. My homeboy worked hard as hell to put that shyt together with some contacts he had with a major r&b artist manager, but the lead singer of the group didn’t want to move to Atalanta. I think that was the last straw and my homie left the music game.

damn..this is making me re think it but the reason why I wanna do this is because music has always been my main interest, specifically hip hop and I don’t exactly wanna be a rapper and I haven’t given producing a fair shot but I thought being an a&r would be cool but that job might be dead? I might’ve heard that on the JBP. Anyway I don’t wanna let my true desires go to waste cause I feel like I’ve always been a hip hop head like most of y’all but I did settle on hip hop just being a interest that I wasn’t gonna do anything with but after hearing someone mention the true desires going to waste I decided I should do something related to music

That’s just my viewpoint from seeing my homeboy be a manger for years. You still should pursue it if you want to do it. Like others have said, it’s best if you find an artist that needs you as much as you need them. And to add to that, I would say make sure they are very passionate about their craft and trying to reach their goals. I don’t know how your budget is, but managers of independent artist usually are spending money in some capacity if not funding it all, so keep that in mind. You also need to look up manger contracts and what they entail, and any artist you are putting time, money and effort into, it’s wise to get them under contract. If you wanna pursue it, pursue it, as long as you understand it’s a lot of bullshyt you will have to deal with and a lot of time and possibly money involved. But it can be very rewarding as well, especially if it’s your passion

Damn I don’t really got that kinda money tbh, I just finished a masters degree. Idk where I thought the money would be coming from lmao. Idk how my boys would view me as a manager although they may trust my music knowledge but idk about the business side tbh or not as much as I thought I did.

Im not trying to scare you lol, just let you know the realities. But you don’t necessarily have to have a lot of money. And it depends on the artist. They may have money for their own studio time. Or you may have to help them. Or you may have to find it all. It all depends on how much you believe in them, your budget, their budget, etc..It’s a team thing, but a sometimes the manger happens to be the one with the money to spare. Sometimes it’s the rapper and they just need the manager to do manager shyt. But typically, a manager of an unsigned artist gonna be helping in some way money wise.

I seen my homeboy pay for studio time for rappers/singers. But it was groups he worked with where the family funded a lot of stuff, and they split some stuff. They were on the road a lot and renting cars, gas, and expenses like that. A lot of shows would cover some stuff, but not all cause they were pretty unknown groups, but they still needed to take the opportunity. So they might not make any money or lose some even though they being paid to perform. Especially when he was managing the r&b group that had 4 members to spit the money with.
