He makes white people feel good about their bigotry. As long as he is in power, they think they are winning. He tells them that they are victims who are being wronged in America. That "everybody else," (blacks, Latinos, gays, Muslims, Jews, feminist) are taking away their way of life. Remember, "it's ok to be white." It's been answered why Republican voters like him but the reason he's been able to take over the party is that politicians, especially Republican politicans are drawn to power and will do anything to obtain and retain power. They need to be a power player and "in the room" for their own ego and self-identity. And seeing how vengeful Trump is and his track record of ending Republican Senator/House member careers who spoke out against him, it scares them into conformity.

If that means going against their own moral and ethical principles, transforming themselves into a completely different person for the sake of appeasement, and putting the party over their own country (January 6), they will do it.

Can't remember which politician said it, but someone said for example Senator Lindsay Graham would sell his own mother down the river if it was a choice between his mother and political power. That's how a lot of them are. They can't imagine a life where they are no longer a power player.

Racism and white resentment of the Obama years.

Desperation kicked in and Trump was the only candidate on the GOP side that gave them a sense of “restoring order/power” in a way that resonated with their emotions.

There were a few other polished Republican candidates in 2015-'16 that could've/would've been a better option but unlike Trump they didn't play into the racial resentment angle the way Trump and his campaign did so those candidates didn't get as much support.

Basically the Southern Strategy all over again but with a few modern day twists (Make America Great Again, etc).
