Nah, Bernie was charismatic but he had two huge factors working against him.


#1: Trump's core was a major part of the actual Republican base. Bernie's core were outsiders to the Democratic party. So Trump had leverage over the Republican Party that Bernie didn't have over the Democratic Party, because Trump was turning their own base against them while establishment Democrats still had the power to keep their base in line.

#2: Democrats played the "socialist" card against Bernie, which actually worked with their elderly base in the primaries because socialists had been demonized by moderates for so long that half the base was afraid of them, and the other half was scared that the ones who were afraid of them would keep them from winning elections. The Republican establishment tried to play the "racist" card against Trump, but it never worked because they'd spent the previous 5 decades telling their base to ignore accusations of racism.

A lot of these Republican politicians like Cruz and Graham who used to disparage him and who Trump has publicly insulted have now fully bent the knee. Plenty have done it and they did not dominate the party completely like Trump has done. So what’s his secret?

People skills and the skills of persuasion. That's what it really boils down to. Also he risked something that old school republicans were scared to do which was going mainstream with the right-wing rhetoric that was already there. With that we are seeing statements by republicans that would have ended careers in the past. They applaud him for that.
