How did Barksdale take over the streets of Baltimore with his garbage ass goons?

im pretty sure the point the show was driving home was that high level enforcers are pretty rare in all gangs, most corner slingers are pawns (note the chess references involving D and bodie), and the co-op was supposed to be a way to make violence less important overall. the co-op was somewhat effective until marlo rose, so the strength of the crew was allowed to be weak for a little while.

I love The Wire but it sometimes sacrificed realism for the story to work. Avon was winning the war with Marlo because he was hiring eastside muscle, he had the bigger war chest. So if Avon could do all that, how the fukk were all those coop dudes be muscled by Marlo? Especially Prop Joe who probably was the richest player in Baltimore?
If each of those dudes contributed with even a single hitter they would have sent Marlo to Bolivia.

I swear people overhype Chris sometimes. I like Chris as much as the next man but he wasn't superhuman. Yes he was ex-military, doesn't mean he was Jack Bauer. In the end his training Marlo's goons didn't amount to shyt since all of them except Michael(who was naturally smart and brave) didn't amount to shyt. His next best student was O-Dog, and he was a mook.

As far as his tactical acumen, yes he had it, but it wasn't anything exclusive. Omar and Brother Mouzone also had it, and Cutty and Slim Charles had it too. See in season 3 where they're planning the (failed) attack on Marlo's corner. They have a drawn map of the street and they plan a pincer movement. Yeah the attack failed because of that fat approval-seeking fukkboi who jumped the gun, but the planning was top notch.

In a nutshell, Chris was dangerous, but so were Wee-Bey, Slim Charles and several others from Avon's crew. Like Chris himself said, "any nikka can be got". No one is invincible on the street.

The whole "chris was ex-military shyt", was he really or is that just something cats saying to big up his gansta? If he really was ex-military, when/how was that mentioned?

It wasn't ever explicitly stated but there are hints here and there.

Marlo muscled the co-op by Stringer getting took out and he saw an opportunity to cut out the middle man. He was able clip Prop Joe thanks to Cheese. THEN he had the connect (The Greek). Prop Joe ALWAYS supplied "that good dope". So when Marlo took him out, he had the whole co-op by the balls ..."price of the brick just went up" ....How you gonna kill someone who has the connect?

They mentioned on the show ...

Being ex-military doesn't mean shyt except having more discipline. Otherwise they should have stated more details like he was actually ex-marine/army or some shyt. Besides that ex-military could be anything like an IT nerd like myself :lolbron:
But on the otherhand I do know how to handle an M-16 :bustback:
