How come PlayStation keeps outselling Xbox even though it hasn’t got Gamepass?

That's not what they said.

They said they've never made a profit off hardware alone. They've also said that gamepass isn't profitable but that's kinda expected since they are spending alot of money on it with the expectations that it will eventually become profitable as the user base grows.

Overall the Xbox division as a whole does make a profit for Microsoft through services and game sales. Their gaming division might not be as profitable as Nintendo or Sony, but that shyt would have been zune/windows phone status if it didn't turn a profit.

Microsoft is not the type of company that would stay in the console market if they weren't making any money off it.
