Man all the kids sayin "lyrics dont matter anymore" are why nikkas like Future are able to get on now. Lyrics are the whole foundation on what hip hop was founded on and now they dont matter?

Just music fam? I mean, if you have no interests in the arts and don't see their importance, shyt, you're entitled to not give a fukk. New rappers today are way more overly emotional and aggressive, even the soft ones. The main complaint about hip-hop today is the quality of the music. You cannot honestly tell me hip-hop is as interesting today as it was back then, other genres constantly pump out crazy amounts of quality material while hip-hop is regressing. The genre is just in a weird place right now, effeminate aggression paired with dyke raps

What is your definition of "quality" hip-hop?

Looks like you're judging the lifestyle of the actual rappers, other than their actual work.

If you cared so much about the "art", you'd just focus on the music, right?

You can't get mad at rappers for talking about what they've actually been through, can you? You deeming it "feminine" just shows how much you care more about image, than you care about the actual music.

To be honest, I think the "art" side of hip-hop has gotten better over the years. Production is INCREDIBLE, these days. Subject matter is what a lot of you guys have a problem with. I understand that, but you've gotta let these kids be themselves. It's 2012, b. You don't have to be a "hard ass nikka, for the sake of being hard", anymore. You can just be a regular kid growing up.

Why complain about it? You guys just seem like you're trying too hard too be bitter. Just enjoy the good music that's out, and shaduppp.

edit: I'm not defending future, tho...that nikka is CABBAGGGGGE.

While I'm at it, I'll throw in that the SOUTH fukked up the need for lyrics in hip-hop. That's not these kids fault, either. Blame the nikkas before them. :smh:

Quality hip-hop is what its always been, dope rhymes and dope beats. Alot of the newer cats subject matter is all over the place, and i'm happy with that. I personally don't care for the overcompensation and aggression which new cats display for no reason, just be you. It's ok for Drake to be an emotional MC from the suburbs, just stay true to your experience. The music will benfit from it. What matters is the MCs ability to be convincing in their music. Prodigy's last verse on "Cradle 2 the Grave" really gives you the feeling of a man who couldn't wait a second longer to kill a nikka. Now, I cant relate to that type of emotion, but he is able to give me some perspective on his feelings and make the listener sympathetic to his plight. That same level of emotion is tangible when you listen to TROY. Or even a track like Pharcyde's "Otha Fish", those opening bars construct the basis for an experience. Ab-Soul's"Empathy" and Kendrick's "ADHD" show more of this. You can be the most vapid, ignorant c00n MC of all time, if you come with some feeling and honesty, you'll have the basis for some good shyt. Camron is just as hip-hop as Lupe, and Little Brother just as dope Clipse or a De La Soul

Dude alot of the "Good music" today you speaking of don't even have a shelf life like that and is forgotten within a month. Nobody is talking about Kendikk Lamar's latest single. Look at how quick Pusha T's last mixtape came and went. Nobody is out there seriously feeling the impact of J Cole's album like people did when Biggie dropped Ready to Die or nobody catching chills when they hear Currensy spiit redundant rhymes about chronic in a passion like Snoop Doggy Dogg in the 90s.

Run DMC, Gangstarr, Public Enemy, NWA, Slick Rick, 2 Live Crew, Ice T, Schooly D, Boogie Down Production, Eric B and Rakim, LL, EPMD, The Beastie Boys, The emergance of Ruthless Records, The Juice Crew, Kool G Rap, Too $hort, Compton's Most Wanted, DJ Quik(He started in the 80s) and a list of many others came from the 80s

Mobb Deep, Bone Thugs N harmony, Three 6 Mafia, Wu Tang Clan, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Above the Law, Boot Camp Click, The LOX The emergance of Death Row Records, The Def Squad, The whole Underground Rawkus camp, UGK, Cypress Hill, Rocafella, Nas, Pac, Biggie, Redman, Keith Murray, Twista, Spice One, Do or Die, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Big L, Naughty By Nature, Eminem, ALL came from the 90s. The funny thing about it is most of those acts that would probably be irrelevant in todays market were selling records and going gold on the regular!

Compare that to:

To
Lil B, Soulja Boy, Rick Ross, Future, Young Jeezy, Justin Beiber, Drake, Nicki Minaji, J Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Meek Mill, J Cole, Slaughterhouse, Odd Future, Kendrick Lamar, Currensy, ASAP Rocky, Yung Chris, French Montana, The Weekend, Big Sean, Tyga, Chris Brown(As a supposed rapper), Machine Gun Kelly, Yellawolf, Freddie Gibbs, Manio, Vado,

And on the whole soft/feminine thing, I fukked up by not clarifying my posistion. That was me just addressing the switch/decimation of gender roles in general. If thats who you are as a person, thats completely fine. You should be makin music true to yourself, just dont try to overcompensate talkin bout catchin bodies and shyt after your last single was a simp anthem. Stop frontin. Its cool bruh, do you. I dont give about a nikkas image and lifestyle as a musician, its all about what his lyrics and music are conveying, just please stay true to your work. So Far Gone was entertaining

My nikka, I feel you to an extent. The tracks you mention are my shyts.

And yeah, that nikka Drake did go left field with that "dont make me catch a body like thatttt:heh:", but I find it hard to believe that EVERY rapper in the 90s was actually doing the shyt they were spitting about.

The fact that they didn't have the internet to spy on them gave them leeway to become whatever they wanted in their rhymes. They could kill everyone in the world, get away with it, rap about it, and no one would question if it was true or not.

You had your exceptions that actually did dirt, but there were studio gangsters in the 90s that made big records too. :yeshrug:

The bolded are rappers, b? :wtf:

Anyways, keeping it real, Hip-hop isn't what it used to be. It's FAR more popular than it was in the 90s AND it's so much easier to ACCESS. It's no longer the black mans lil secret. You don't have to cop a cassette off the street, or borrow your homeboys shyt and copy it. You have the internet now.

It's fast pace. Nothing has time to marinate. It's either you drop a bunch of NEW shyt EVERYDAY, or you get left behind on the last page of someones blog. It's the way to stay relevant in the age of the internet.

With that said, music becomes forgettable, these days, because there is SO much of it. Non stop drops, by so many artist. New and old. Everyone is a rapper.

Don't expect hip-hop to go back to the "everyone sells gold" days. Those days are over. People don't care about old. It's all about the new.

Summed up: Shelf-life doesn't exist, because the internet doesn't allow it to.

True shyt bruh. Everyone is just tryna make somethin for themselves, and I understand what they have to do. I view fraudulent rappers as an extension of musicians taking on stage names and creating personas. Rick Ross the rap persona is no different than Bowie creating the Ziggy Stardust concept.

To sum this whole shyt up tho, were just all longing for that life-altering, crazy album thats gonna give nikkas that old feeling again. Its not coming though, and our emotional sentiment and overzealous expectations will not let us experience that again. We just need to try and enjoy whats available, quality hip-hop is still out there

that nikka msims is out here tellin truth. listen to that nikka. i hate threads like this and i hate respondin to threads like this because no matter what i or a nikka like msisms is sayin this thread will be made again no matter what type of music comes out in the future. and a young nikka listenin to music 2day is gonna make the same thread 10 years from now. its a cycle. old heads were complainin about your music when you was growin up. nikkas got to understand that its not the 90's no more fam. you were enjoyin music back then just like i and the people that like hiphop now a days is doin. stop complainin about the music not bein like the 90's in 2012. you don't like it nobody is forcin you to listen to it. find some new nikkas you do like and enjoy if not listen to the shyt from back then that you do enjoy. and stop comparin shyt to when you were growin up because if you do you are never gonna like anythin new. it's kinda hard for somethin new to come out and be as enjoyable as somethin from back then when you were young and livin the life.

The Opposite Of Elliott Wilson's Mohawk
Dr. Dre and Snoop dogg would be considered fake as fukk if they came out in today's era.

That the thing. Your Rap heros did not have to deal with blogs, twitter etc. Searching for and trying to drag every single skeleton out of their closet.

I honestly dont believe a lot of the rappers yall look up to as super heros would survive in this era.

O please. Tupac tried to drag Biggie's image + character through the dirt. The NWA break up was pretty ugly. And rappers subject themselves to all that horseshyt. I'm pretty sure Jay doesn't have Twitter. Nobody put a gun to any rapper's head and said "YOU MUST EXPOSE YOURSELF"

And the rappers I look up to wouldn't survive in this era because fans today don't care about the things that make them great. nikkas would not listen to Biggie, they would be too turned off by his lazy eye. nikkas would not listen to Big Pun, "hes too fat". nikkas wouldn't listen to Nas, "why he gotta use all them big words". Mainstream rap fans are stupid as fukk these days and care about everything but the music... and a lot of these rappers are stupid for playing into the "image is everything" disease. So yea they wouldn't survive, but its cause of superficial ass fans like yourself.
