I gotta say, I'm always pro player, but the salary structure in MLB needs to change. These massive contracts are just AIDS and they suck for the fans.
Look at these recent contracts that are struggling right now
Trevor Story - 6/$140 million (runs through 2028)
Javier Baez - 6/$140 million (2027)
Carlos Correa - 6/$200 million with the potential to be 10/$275 (2028-2032)
Francisco Lindor - 10/$341 million (2031)
Rafael Devers - 10/$313 million (2033)
Trea Turner - 11/$300 million (2033)
Xander Bogaerts - 11/$280 million (2033)
Nolan Arenado - 8/$260 million (2027) <-----I know he was great last year.
Anthony Rendon - 7/$245 million (2026)
Christian Yelich - 7/$188 million (2029)
Jacob deGrom - 5/$185 million (2027)
Kris Bryant - 7/$182 million (2028)
Brandon Nimmo - 8/$162 million (2030)
Guys with A LOT of years left that might be declining:
Mike Trout
Manny Machado
Bryce Harper
Aaron Judge (was awesome before the injury...but he's had a lot of those in his career now)
They need to fix the front end where guys are under team control for too long and the back end needs to get fixed as well. They aren't gonna do a salary cap but there should be a limit on the term length of these contracts.
I love the NBA's system of five years if you stay with your team and four on the open market. Dumb teams are gonna do dumb things regardless but it limits the overall damage.
