Pull up Google maps and learn the back streets. Nearly every freeway has a corresponding back street that goes in the same general direction. Houston Freeway's while convenient, are for newbies.

I looked it up it earlier to avoid tolls/highways and ima try it tomorrow, Mykawa rd

Take almeda. Goes straight to med center. Scott street will also take you into town from the south.

Avoid 288 at all costs.

Not a long distance, no, but I have family that does ofteh. Bus+train commute to work. They rarely have good things to say about it.
