Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman wrote this book in 2011. A couple writers pitched her on turning that book into a documentary while updating where we are now. They’ve got Tony Todd, Jordan peele, rusty cundieff, Tina Mabry and other horror vets and scholars exploring the ways in which black peoples have been, should be, and will be depicted in horror films.

I've started to notice an upward trend in black roles for horror films. I swear, if I had to watch another horror film where a black character gets killed first or gets killed in the worst manner possible (ala Friday the 13th, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Texas Chainsaw..) out of all the victims, or becomes the "comedic" sidekick, I was going to scream (pun intended).

Interesting trailer and subject matter for the documentary.... Shudder keeps getting better and better with their content. Must-see watch. Thanks for posting :salute:. Bookmarked.

Yeah I was on BMDs site and one of the writers on the doc used to write for them. Well two of them did, actually. One now is the editor in chief of fangoria and the other started her own site, graveyardshift sisters. They talked about doing a documentary about black horror films and black characters in horror films back in 2017 and damn it all, shyt became a reality. The link I posted is her explaining it in her own words.

Also thinking of picking up this book because I’ve seen this author talk on so many movie documentaries and specials.

I said it before but if you like or love horror and don’t subscribe to shudder, I really don’t understand why you don’t like happiness

Yeah she mentioned this in her interview. Said that horror flicks seemed to be commenting on the way society sees us as invisible or just a small cog to serve a larger narrative.

For me, if a brother or sister dies in a horror flick, I’d prefer it to have meaning or they go out doing something dope. Take the villain with you or at least take half the villain with you.

Duane Martin as the cameraman in scream 2 is still the smartest black man in the history of horror. He saw the shyt was going down, he bounced, then came back when the credits were about to roll.
