Been hosting Plex for going on 7 years now, family and friends use it more than I do
Same, I kept them fed when I was heavy on the torrents but since the pandemic and most major titles hit streaming, I slowed down.

My custom build:

Mobo: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O
CPU: Intel Xeon Quad-Core E3-1220V2 3.1GHz
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 16GB SanDisk USB key, 6 4TB WD Reds (ZFS)
Intel 4-port NIC (in LAGG congiruation), 1 on board 1GB NIC, 1 IPMI port
Running TrueNas Core 13.0 U3
Services: Plex, Docker, iSCSCI LUNs for HyperV VMs, SMB shares

Build is going on 9 years strong at pretty much 24/7, has survived a relocation, have only had to replace USB keys that TrueNas is stored on, original storage was 2TB WD Reds.

Looking to build out a new custom build later this year that I'm looking to make a Proxmox box that will host the above NAS configuration as a VM along with a PiHole instance, a Cloudflare reverse proxy, home automation dashboard, and some sort of full lab/network monitoring. I want to consolidate my NAS and HP mini server into a single box.

Yall got fancy setups :russ:

I'm running an i7 8th gen laptop connected to an external 8 TB drive lol.

Running Debian Linux, Docker Compose, Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr, Jellyfin, and a bunch of other little tools.

Works great but I'm not really achieving anything with my disk space except music.

How do you feel about Jellyfin vs Plex (if you've used both)?

Jellyfin is free and more customizable. I feel it's better for me just takes longer to setup fully.

Plex has alot of things ready to go out the box like Remote playback. But it's not hard to setup on Jellyfin.

But I don't like dealing with all that extra shyt like on demand streaming or live TV that Plex has now.

I'd say try out both though. But if you really like Plex you gotta pay to use it on your phone or transcode.

What kind of hard drives should I but if I’m building my own server? I’m envisioning using it as a media server and home assistant type things.

I use either HGST Ultrastar or Seagate NAS rated HDD's. they are made to run continuously if you wanted, but i never do that
i have over 7100 hours for each HDD on my NAS and they are running strong
i did have to replace one drive years ago ( My downstairs unit went out and it overheated before i realized it) -
but it was a simple hot swap because i run Raid 10

and always keep a spare ( or 2)
